Is it true that consuming olive oil causes weight gain?
No. A large 2025 pooled analysis of three United States prospective cohorts found that each daily 7 g increment in olive oil consumption was inversely associated with body weight, with substitution of olive oil for other fats linked to less weight gain. A randomized trial in preterm infants also found olive oil supplementation increased weight gain, but in a different population.
