Is it true that the 300 Spartans held off the Persians at Thermopylae?

Yes. Multiple reference and scholarly sources state that in 480 BC a Greek force including about 300 Spartans under Leonidas held off a much larger Persian army under Xerxes at the pass of Thermopylae for several days before being outflanked.
