Is it true that loneliness reduces cognitive abilities?
Partly. Several studies report associations between greater loneliness and poorer cognitive performance in older adults, but these are single-cohort, largely cross-sectional findings. A longitudinal Lothian Birth Cohort analysis found no support for loneliness causing later cognitive decline, so the causal claim is only partly supported and partly contradicted.
