Is it true that stomach growling when hungry comes from muscle contractions pushing gas and fluid through the digestive tract, called borborygmi?

Yes. One reference item states that the rumbling noise arises from muscular activity in the stomach and small intestines squeezing and propelling food, gas and fluids, and calls it borborygmi; a second item confirms the term borborygmi and its link to hunger, and a physiology source documents the peristaltic contractions involved.
