Is it true that Earthworms eat soil, swallowing dirt together with the decaying organic matter it contains as their main food?

Yes. One peer-reviewed source states that earthworms live in the soil and eat soil mixed with dead and decaying organic matter, which directly matches the claim. The remaining retrieved items concern unrelated topics such as invasive earthworm effects, badger diets, or soil carbon stocks.
