Is it true that plastic bags break down into microplastics?

Yes. Multiple reference and peer-reviewed sources state that plastic bags, as larger plastic items, degrade and fragment into secondary microplastics. One three-year study found bags resisted substantial breakdown, though they formed smaller particles in air.
