Marie Antoinette said 'Let them eat cake'.

the verdict

REFUTED

the evidence says no

Recorded sources

1 source for · 9 against

Counts group repeated records of the same source within each side. They do not measure evidence strength or source independence.

Is it true that Marie Antoinette said 'Let them eat cake'?

No. Multiple reference works, a fact-check rating the attribution a myth, and a peer-reviewed article state there is no evidence Marie Antoinette ever said 'Let them eat cake', tracing the phrase to Rousseau and earlier princesses. Only a cookbook repeats the attribution without evidence.
