Is it true that there are basic emotions that are universally recognized?

Partly. Several sources report Ekman's finding that six basic emotions are universally recognized, and one cross-cultural music study found three emotions recognized across cultures. However, other sources note serious challenges to universality, with one study finding predicted labels matched only a minority of faces.
