Is it true that the AR in AR-15 stands for ArmaLite Rifle, not assault rifle?

Yes. Three reference works state directly that 'AR' in AR-15 stands for ArmaLite (rifle) and not assault rifle, with one calling the assault-rifle reading a common misconception.
