Is it true that sunburns increase the lifetime risk of melanoma?

Yes. A 2008 meta-analysis pooling 51 study populations found melanoma risk rises with the number of sunburns across childhood, adolescence, adulthood and lifetime, and its pooled dose-response data show lifetime sunburns are important in melanoma risk. Several cohort and case-control studies in specific populations (Norwegian women, French women, an Italian case-control study) likewise report higher melanoma risk with more sunburns.
