Is it true that compressed natural gas, which is mostly methane, is used as a fuel in production cars?

Yes. Two sources directly cover both halves of the claim: methane is used as automobile fuel and natural gas is mostly methane, and CNG is used in cars and trucks. Several other sources confirm CNG is used as fuel in cars but do not address the methane composition.
