Linguistic references and literature indicate that vowel duration is not phonemic in General American English, where vowel length operates as allophonic rather than serving to distinguish word meanings.
This study examined the role of automatic selective perceptual processes in native and non-native listeners' perception of a Japanese vowel length contrast (tado vs. taado), using multiple, natural-speech tokens of each category as stimuli in a “categorial oddball” design. Mismatch Negativity (MMN) was used to index discrimination of the temporally-cued vowel contrast by naïve adult American listeners and by a native Japanese-speaking control group in two experiments in which attention to the auditory input was manipulated: in Exp 1 (Visual-Attend), listeners silently counted deviants in a simultaneously-presented visual categorial oddball shape discrimination task; in Exp 2 (Auditory-Attend), listeners attended to the auditory input and implicitly counted target deviants. MMN results showed effects of language experience and attentional focus: MMN amplitudes were smaller for American compared to Japanese listeners in the Visual-Attend Condition and for the American listeners in the Visual compared to Auditory-Attend condition. Subtle differences in topography were also seen, specifically in that the Japanese group showed more robust responses than the American listener's at left hemisphere scalp sites that probably index activity from the superior temporal gyrus. Follow-up behavioral discrimination tests showed that Americans discriminated the contrast well above chance, but more poorly than did Japanese listeners. This pattern of electrophysiological and behavioral results supports the conclusion that early experience with phonetic contrasts of a language results in changes in neural representations in auditory cortex that allow for more robust automatic, phonetic processing of native-language speech input.
Speech perception patterns are strongly influenced by one's native phonology. It is generally accepted that native English listeners rely primarily on spectral cues when perceiving vowels, making limited use of duration cues because English lacks phonemic vowel length. However, the literature on vowel perception by English listeners shows a marked bias toward American English, with the phonological diversity among different varieties of English largely overlooked. The current study investigates the perception of Japanese vowel length contrasts by native listeners of Australian English, which is reported to use length to distinguish vowels unlike most other varieties of English. Twenty monolingual Australian English listeners participated in a forced-choice experiment, where they categorized Japanese long and short vowels as most similar to their native vowel categories. The results showed a general tendency for Japanese long and short vowels (e.g., /ii, i/) to be categorized as Australian English long and short vowels (e.g., /i:, ɪ/ as in “heed,” “hid”), respectively, which contrasts with American English listeners' categorization of all Japanese vowels as tense regardless of length (e.g., /ii, i/ as both “heed”) as reported previously. Moreover, this duration-based categorization was found not only for Australian English categories that contrast in duration alone (e.g., /ɐ:, ɐ/ as in “hard,” “hud”) but also for those that contrast in both duration and spectra (e.g., /o:, ɔ/ as in “hoard,” “hod”), despite their spectral mismatch from the corresponding Japanese vowels (e.g., /aa, a/ and /oo, o/). The results, therefore, suggest that duration cues play a prominent role across all vowel categories—even nonnative—for Australian English listeners. The finding supports a feature-based framework of speech perception, where phonological features like length are shared across multiple categories, rather than the segment-based framework that is currently dominant, which regards acoustic cues like duration as being tied to a specific native segmental category. Implications for second and foreign language learning are discussed.

Phonological accounts of American English [W. Labov et al., The Atlas of North American English (Walter de Gruyter, Berlin, 2006)] rely on historical and phonotactic analysis to categorize the vowels as either long (two morae) or short (one mora). The vowels of beat, bait, boot, boat, bought, bite, bout, boy are traditionally identified as long, while bit, bet, bat, book, but, bot are supposedly short. It is a reasonable question whether these vowels are indeed longer and shorter, respectively, in phonetic duration. A study of “General American” [H. A. Rositzke, “Vowel-length in general American speech,” Language 15(2), 99–109 (1939)] examined the durations of the vowels of five subjects in scripted utterances, without controlling for dialect. The findings were mostly in accord with the above categories, with the exceptions that [æ, ɑ] (bat, bot) were both phonetically long. The present study is an effort to replicate Rositzke’s on 341 425 vowel tokens in the Buckeye Corpus of conversational English (40 speakers from Columbus, Ohio). The results essentially confirm that the vowels [æ, ɑ] (bat, bot) are phonetically as long as the traditional “long” vowels. This situation calls the traditional analysis of American English vowel length into question.
