Selective attention, visual short-term memory (VSTM), and visual consciousness are longstanding core domains in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Recent findings using partial report and change detection paradigms suggest that VSTM involves multiple stages, each engaging distinct attentional processes. Crucially, the interplay between selective attention and VSTM lies at the heart of prominent theories of visual consciousness, such as the Recurrent Processing Theory (RPT) and the Global Neuronal Workspace Theory (GNWT), which distinguish between phenomenal, linked to sensory memory, and access consciousness, linked to working memory. However, research in these domains has often progressed independently, lacking an integrated perspective. To advance understanding of their interactions, we conducted a PRISMA systematic review of behavioral and neuroimaging studies across Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. A total of 42 studies were included. Risk of bias was assessed using a modified version of the AXIS tool. Results indicate that selective attention is necessary for information to reach visual working memory. In earlier sensory memory stages, attentional manipulations impair performance under dual-task and spatial attention conditions but enhance it through feature-based prioritization. Neuroimaging findings support the involvement of temporal signatures associated with attentional modulation, phenomenal and access consciousness, and post-perceptual processes. Finally, results highlight a lack of empirical research directly addressing the role of attention in the encoding of sensory memory. Building on current evidence and drawing on the RPT and GNWT frameworks, we propose a four-stage model integrating VSTM stages, selective attention, and visual consciousness, laying the groundwork for future empirical and theoretical developments.
The dominant paradigm for understanding working memory, or the combination of the perceptual, attentional, and mnemonic processes needed for thinking, subdivides short-term memory (STM) according to whether memoranda are encoded in aural-verbal or visual formats. This traditional dissociation has been supported by examples of neuropsychological patients who seem to selectively lack STM for either aural-verbal, visual, or spatial memoranda, and by experimental research using dual-task methods. Though this evidence is the foundation of assumptions of modular STM systems, the case it makes for a specialized visual STM system is surprisingly weak. I identify the key evidence supporting a distinct verbal STM system-patients with apparent selective damage to verbal STM and the resilience of verbal short-term memories to general dual-task interference-and apply these benchmarks to neuropsychological and experimental investigations of visual-spatial STM. Contrary to the evidence on verbal STM, patients with apparent visual or spatial STM deficits tend to experience a wide range of additional deficits, making it difficult to conclude that a distinct short-term store was damaged. Consistently with this, a meta-analysis of dual-task visual-spatial STM research shows that robust dual-task costs are consistently observed regardless of the domain or sensory code of the secondary task. We have used positron emission tomography to map the mnemonic components of two tasks at the extremes of the visual short-term/ working memory spectrum. The successive discrimination task requires only storage of a single item for very short time (ultra-short- term memory), while the 2back task requires both maintenance (i.e. storage and rehearsal) and manipulation of several items (working memory). We tested whether or not the storage component, common to the two tasks, engaged the same cerebral regions. To remove unnecessary confounds, we reduced the cues available to the subjects to a single elementary attribute, the orientation of a grating presented in central vision. This prevented subjects from using verbal strategies or vestibular cues and allowed equating of difficulty among tasks. Ultra-short-term memory for orientation engaged a large expanse of occipito-temporal cortex with a rate-dependent antero-posterior gradient: a fast trial rate engaged posterior regions, a slow trial rate anterior regions. On the other hand, working memory for orientation involved the left inferior parietal cortex, left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and a left superior frontal sulcus region, and to a lesser degree the symmetrical right superior frontal region and a left superior parietal region. In 1974 Baddeley and Hitch introduced the multicomponent model of working memory. The theory proposed a model containing three components: the central executive, the phonological loop, and the visuospatial scratchpad with the central executive functioning as a control center of sorts, directing info between the phonological and visuospatial components. The central executive is responsible for, among other things, directing attention to relevant information, suppressing irrelevant information and inappropriate actions, and coordinating cognitive processes when more than one task is simultaneously performed. A "central executive" is responsible for supervising the integration of information and for coordinating subordinate systems responsible for the short-term maintenance of information. One subordinate system, the phonological loop (PL), stores phonological information (that is, the sound of language) and prevents its decay by continuously refreshing it in a rehearsal loop. It can, for example, maintain a seven-digit telephone number for as long as one repeats the number to oneself repeatedly. The other subordinate system, the visuospatial sketchpad, stores visual and spatial information.
