Ancient DNA studies of Roman-era Britain demonstrate that foreign immigration during the Roman period led to detectable continental and Mediterranean ancestry within the local population.
Recent large-scale ancient DNA studies focusing on Roman Britain (such as Lachance et al., 2026) and the broader Roman Empire (Olalde et al., 2019) explicitly show that while overall genomic continuity from the Iron Age remained dominant, a significant minority (around 20%) of individuals during the Roman period in Britain carried ancestry from outside the island, confirming interbreeding and migration.
