Available literature provides partial evidence connecting food loss and waste behavior to economic loss using market prices, but does not broadly establish a proven, universal quantitative link between food wastage and food prices.
Reducing food loss and waste (FLW) is one strategy to limit the environmental impact of the food supply chain. Australian data suggest that primary production accounts for 31% of national FLW, but there are no comparable data in New Zealand. This study aimed to measure food loss and explore food loss drivers for one of New Zealand’s largest tomato growers by weighing and visually assessing tomato losses at the glasshouse, packhouse and sales warehouse. Qualitative interviews were also held with the grower (n = 3), employees (n = 10), and key industry stakeholders (n = 8). Total food loss for this greenhouse tomato grower was 16.9% of marketed yield, consisting of 13.9% unharvested tomatoes, 2.8% rejected at the glasshouse and 0.3% rejected at the packhouse. The grower’s tomato loss predominantly resulted from commercial factors such as market price, competitor activity and supply and demand. Similar issues were recognized throughout the New Zealand horticulture sector. Commercial factors, in particular, are challenging to address, and collaboration throughout the supply chain will be required to help growers reduce food losses.
Background: households are one of the biggest contributors to food waste in DKI Jakarta. This is caused by household food loss and waste (FLW) behavior and the impact of this behavior is economic loss and nutritional loss in vain. Objective: To analyze the correlation between FLW behavior and household economic and nutrition loss during the Covid-19 pandemic in West Jakarta. Methods: This study is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design involving 100 households in the Kebon Jeruk area, West Jakarta. The analysis in this study uses the Spearman Rank correlation. Data were collected by interview technique using FLW behavior questionnaire and food waste questionnaire form filled out by respondents for 4x24 hours. The value of this economic loss will be analyzed using the market price listed on Hargapangan.id and the value of nutrition loss will be analyzed using nutrisurvey2007. The results: there is a relationship between FLW behavior on economic loss (p = 0.02; p <0.05) but there is no relationship between FLW behavior on nutrition loss, namely energy loss (p = 0.15; p> 0.05), protein loss (p=0,20;p>0,05), fat loss (p=0,33;p>0,05) and carbohydrate loss (p=0,12;p>0,05). Households are expected to change their FLW behavior in order to minimize economic losses and optimally utilize nutrition.
