<p dir="ltr">In November 1939, the Red Army invaded Finland, beginning the four-month-long Winter War. When it ended with the Moscow Peace Treaty in March 1940, the Soviets technically won, but at great cost. Adolf Hitler, who had been watching from afar, believed the time to invade the Soviet Union had arrived. Operation Barbarossa began in the summer of 1941 and it seemed inevitable that the Soviet Union would fall, but the same army which failed to conquer Finland only a year earlier now found the strength to hold back the Germans. This paper considers the military, political, geographical, and social factors which influenced the Red Army’s performance in the Winter War and Operation Barbarossa to determine how the Soviets were capable of fending off invading German forces despite their failure in Finland. An analysis reveals the similar errors made by both aggressors, beginning with a fatal underestimation of their opponent’s capabilities.</p>
