Study Design. Literature review. Objective. To examine changes in authorship characteristics for Spine publications from the year 2000 to 2015. Summary of Background Data. Scientific publications are considered an indication of academic achievement for physicians. Recently, authorship trends have been investigated; however, limited information is available on this topic within spine-specific literature. Methods. Original research articles published in Spine in the years 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 were evaluated. Authorship characteristics were collected for each article, including the number of authors and institutions per publication, first and last authors’ sex, publication origin, and highest degree held by the first and last author. Trends over time were analyzed using numeric and visual descriptive analyses including percentages, means, standard deviations, and graphs. Results. An average of 506 articles per year was published in Spine during the years 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. The number of articles written by 10 or more authors increased during this time (0.9%–14.4%). There was a substantial increase in the number of multiple institutional affiliations (33.6%–68.7%) and articles originating from outside North America (47.6%–55.7%) from 2000 to 2015. The percentage of first authors with bachelor's degrees was higher in 2015 (6.6%) as compared to 2000 (1.4%), and more last authors were identified as MD/PhDs in 2015 (19.2%) than in 2000 (10.0%). Similar female representation was noted for first and last authorship for all years evaluated. Conclusion. The results of this study demonstrate increases in authors per article published in Spine from 2000 to 2015. In addition, first authors were more likely to hold bachelor's degrees over time. This may be attributed to increasing competition in spine-related fields, necessitating earlier research exposure to aid in academic achievement. Interestingly, the percentage of female authorship has not changed significantly over time, in contrast with much of the previous literature. Level of Evidence: 2
ABSTRACT Introduction: the periodic evaluation of the scientific production of a journal is the reliable tool that will allow evaluating the trend and quality of the science published in it. Objective: to characterize the scientific production published in the journal Universidad Médica Pinareña during the period 2017-2020. Methods: a bibliometric study of the articles published in the journal Universidad Médica Pinareña during the period 2017-2020 was carried out. The universe studied consisted of 177 articles. The following variables were analyzed: year of publication, type of article, number of authors, country of origin of the main author, language in which the article was written, number of bibliographic references and their degree of updating. Descriptive statistics were used and the Price and annual collaboration indexes were calculated. Results: it was found that 88 (49,7 %) papers were original and 61 (34,5 %) belonged to the year 2020. A total of 614 authors published, with an average of 3,5 authors per article. It was observed that 58 (32,8 %) articles were signed by five authors, 168 (94,9 %) came from Cuba, and 175 (98,9 %) were written in Spanish. The annual collaboration index had an average value of 3,44. The average number of bibliographic references per article was 13,6 and the Price index was 0,67. The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), focused on publishing the highest-quality evidence for advancing medical sciences and improving patient care, noted that from 1975 to 1989, the mean number of authors increased from four to six and the number of papers with single authors decreased from 9% to 3%.
1 For scientific papers indexed in PubMed, the mean number of authors pre-1975 was 1.9 and from 2015-2019 was 5.9 per paper. 2 In an editorial from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA ) , the median number of authors per article increased from a range of eight to 11 in 2005 to a range of 11 to 18 in 2015 for the three leading general medical journals, specifically JAMA, The Lancet , and the NEJM. 3 In pharmacy practice journals, such as the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, Annals of Pharmacotherapy , and Pharmacotherapy , there has been a similar trend in the number of authors per article over time, with fewer single-author papers seen in 1989, 1999, and 2009.
For Lyman Award–nominated papers, the number of authors ranged from one to 12 with a mean (SD) of 4.7 (2.2), and the number of institutions associated with these authors ranged from one to eight with a mean (SD) of 2.2 (1.6). Table 1 lists the number of published papers for each article type. The article type with the largest number of published papers was Research (386), followed by IDA (107) and Commentary (94). The number of authors for manuscripts addressing scholarly research and assessment (Research, IDA, and Education/Research Brief) had approximately four authors and two institutions (average range of 4.1 to 4.4 for authors and 1.4 to 2.1 for unique institutions).

Publishing in academic journals is primary to disseminate research findings, with authorship reflecting a scientist’s contribution, yielding academic recognition, and carrying significant financial implications. Author numbers per article have consistently risen in recent decades, as demonstrated in various journals and fields. This study is a comprehensive analysis of authorship trends in biomedical papers from the NCBI PubMed database between 2000 and 2020, utilizing the Entrez Direct (EDirect) E-utilities to retrieve bibliometric data from a dataset of 17,015,001 articles.
