We then discuss theoretical models of taste-based discrimination, particularly models of frictional labor markets and models of statistical discrimination, including recent work on invalid statistical discrimination.
We explore and evaluate the evidence for and against these theories. Although there is substantial evidence of the existence of discrimination, little is known about the extent to which disparities are driven by discrimination. Finally, we argue that economists miss the important self-enforcing relationship between disparities and discrimination and the effect of disparities in one domain on discrimination in other domains.
収録刊行物 Journal of Economic Perspectives Journal of Economic Perspectives 34 (2), 68-89, 2020-05-01 American Economic Association 被引用文献 (1) *注記 読み込み中...
The Arbeitsmarktdiskriminierung "ADIS" project is a large scale correspondence study that was conducted in Germany between October 2014 and April 2016 with the aim to study labor market discrimination against second generation immigrants. In particular, the experiment was designed for two purposes: First, to decompose drivers of ethnic discrimination in the labor market and to understand the role of phenotype, country of origin, and religion in order to explain ethnic hierarchies; and second, to test economic theories of taste-based and statistical discrimination models, in order to explain di

This chapter first reviews a large literature in economics that aims to complement Becker’s theoretical framework and to test its empirical predictions. Then, the chapter covers the literature in several disciplines (mostly economics, social psychology, and sociology) that defines concepts that are close to Becker’s prejudice, and question its sources. The chapter also seeks to connect taste-based discrimination with other theories of discrimination, in
