Peer-reviewed literature links heavy smartphone and internet use to digital dependencies and related anxieties such as nomophobia, but the available evidence does not conclusively establish a direct causal rise in clinical social phobia cases due to technology use.
The present work aims to replicate findings linking specific personality traits with Internet and Smartphone Use Disorder (IUD/SUD). Specifically, earlier research demonstrated that tendencies toward IUD and SUD are associated with high Neuroticism and both low Conscientiousness and low Agreeableness, while IUD (but not SUD) tendencies are negatively related to Extraversion and SUD (but not IUD) tendencies are negatively associated with Openness (1). In the aftermath of the replication crisis in psychology and related disciplines, it has become increasingly important to replicate findings in psychological research. Therefore, we revisited this earlier study by investigating (i) a sample from different countries and (ii) using different questionnaires to assess IUD, SUD and the Five Factor Model of Personality than the earlier work by Lachmann et al. (1). By applying such a design, we believe that replicating results from this earlier study hints toward generalizable associations being (largely) independent from that sample's specific cultural background and instrumentation. Importantly (iii) we used a larger sample consisting of N = 773 in the present study to have higher statistical power to observe the initially reported associations. Additionally, we investigated the role of impulsivity and social anxiety on IUD/SUD, further illuminating the nature of these potential new disorders. Indeed, we were able to reaffirm the aforementioned correlation patterns between personality and IUD/SUD in the present work to a large extent, with low Conscientiousness and high Neuroticism being most robustly associated with higher IUD/SUD. Furthermore, social anxiety and impulsivity showed positive correlations with IUD and SUD, as expected.
In the age range of 16-18 years, commonly known as adolescence, individuals undergo a period of self-discovery in their socio-emotional development. Failures during this process can lead to individuals experiencing anxiety in social interactions, which can have a negative impact on their mental health. The Indonesia National Adolescent Mental Health Survey (I-NAMHS), findings also indicate that the most prevalent mental disorder among adolescents is anxiety disorder (a combination of social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder), is equivalent to 15.5 million. The widespread use of the internet and social media, on one hand, has led to a high dependency on smartphones among teenagers, causing them to spend more time interacting in the virtual world. Over an extended period, this condition can lead to social anxiety due to the fear of failure and lack of success. The objective of this research is to explore whether there is a difference in social anxiety among teenagers living in rural or urban areas, related to factors such as the duration of smartphone usage, school activities, and so on. The results of this research are crucial for providing feedback to high schools, especially for early detection of potential anxiety symptoms from the beginning, in order to prevent and provide appropriate treatment for social anxiety, thus not affecting students' academic achievements. It is recommended that schools conduct early detection measures.
<h4>Introduction</h4>The rise in smartphone use and the resulting dependence has led to the emergence of nomophobia, a term describing the anxiety or discomfort experienced when individuals are without their mobile phones. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of nomophobia among adults in Cyprus and explore its relationship with demographic characteristics, reasons for smartphone use, and coping styles.<h4>Methods</h4>In line with this aim, participants were 300 adults from Cyprus recruited by convenience and snowball sampling methods. The data were collected via an internet-based questionnaire that examined participants' level of nomophobia, reasons for phone use, time spent on their phones, and coping styles. The study utilized a Personal Information Form, the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), and the Brief Coping to Problems Experienced Inventory (Brief COPE) to gather data.<h4>Results</h4>The results suggest that (a) nearly all participants (99.3%) exhibited some level of nomophobia, with more than half of our sample (51.3%) experiencing moderate levels, (b) younger adults, women, and individuals with lower education levels were more prone to nomophobia, (c) communication and social media were positively related to nomophobia, and (d) maladaptive and avoidant coping strategies exacerbated the severity of nomophobia.<h4>Discussion</h4>The findings highlight the growing concern of nomophobia and stress the need for educational programs promoting healthier smartphone habits.
<b>Background/Objectives</b>: Nomophobia, the irrational fear of being without a mobile phone, is increasingly prevalent among university students and has emerged as a concerning form of digital dependence. Among nursing students, this condition is particularly relevant due to the emotional demands and cognitive challenges of healthcare education. Nomophobia has been linked with adverse psychological outcomes, sleep disturbances, and impaired academic and clinical performance. However, existing evidence remains fragmented and lacks an integrated conceptual synthesis. This review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the prevalence, correlates, and outcomes of nomophobia among nursing students. <b>Methods</b>: An integrative review was conducted following Whittemore and Knafl's methodology and PRISMA guidelines. A systematic search was performed in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, PsycArticles, and Medline (between 2015 and 2025), supplemented by Google Scholar. Cross-sectional studies and literature focusing on nomophobia in nursing students were included. The primary studies and selected review articles were considered when no overlap with the included primary evidence was identified. Methodological quality appraisal was assessed using validated tools (QuADS and JBI). <b>Results</b>: Twenty-two studies were included (19 cross-sectional and 3 reviews). Four thematic areas emerged: prevalence and severity (50-90% moderate to severe); psychological correlates (anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, alexithymia, fear of missing out); academic and cognitive outcomes (impaired performance, procrastination, reduced decision-making); and behavioural predictors (excessive smartphone use and emotional dysregulation). The Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) was the most frequently used instrument. <b>Conclusions</b>: Nomophobia represents a relevant dimension of the mind-technology relationship in nursing education, with implications for students' mental health, academic engagement, and clinical readiness. Addressing nomophobia may support healthier learning environments and contribute to the development of emotionally competent and safe future healthcare professionals. However, significant gaps remain, particularly regarding longitudinal evidence and intervention-based approaches.
The increasing use of technology in daily life can significantly affect individuals' habits and lifestyles. With the widespread use of digital devices, sleep quality has become one of the key areas influenced by technological change. This study aims to examine the mediating roles of FoMO and nomophobia in the relationship between doomscrolling and poor sleep quality. The hypotheses were tested using a descriptive-correlational design with a sample of 663 adults, including 531 women and 132 men, aged between 18 and 77 (Mean = 25.00, SD = 7.53). PROCESS Macro 4.1 (Model 6) was applied to assess multiple mediation effects. According to the results, doomscrolling was positively associated with poor sleep quality (b = .059, 95% CI [.028, .089]). Doomscrolling also significantly predicted FoMO (b = .279, 95% CI [.211, .346]) and nomophobia (b = .092, 95% CI [.056, .129]). FoMO significantly predicted nomophobia (b = .343, 95% CI [.304, .382]). However, FoMO did not significantly predict poor sleep quality (b = -.014, 95% CI [-.053, .024]). Nomophobia, on the other hand, was a significant predictor of poor sleep quality (b = .219, 95% CI [.156, .281]). Mediation analysis showed that nomophobia had a significant mediating role in the relationship between doomscrolling and poor sleep quality (b = .020, 95% CI [.011, .031]). Although FoMO alone was not a significant mediator (b = -.004, 95% CI [-.015, .007]), FoMO and nomophobia together showed a positive combined mediation effect (b = .021, 95% CI [.013, .030]). These findings suggest that increasing awareness of smartphone and social media use may contribute to improving sleep quality. Including strategies to reduce nomophobia, FoMO, and doomscrolling in sleep-related psychoeducational programs may be beneficial.
