Human languages can express an infinite number of thoughts despite having a finite set of words and rules. This is due, in part, to recursive structures, which allow us to embed one instance of a rule inside another. We investigated the origins of recursion by studying the development of Nicaraguan Sign Language (LSN), which emerged in the last 40 years and is not derived from any existing language. Before this, deaf individuals in Nicaragua lacked access to language models and each individual created their own gestural system, called homesign. We tested four groups: homesigners, who represent the point of origin, and the first three generations of LSN signers, who represent consecutive stages in the language's development. We used a task that was designed to elicit sentences with relative clauses, a device that allows for the recursive embedding of sentences inside of sentences (e.g., [the girl [who was drawing] removed the picture]). Signers in all three LSN cohorts consistently produced utterances that appeared to have embedded predicates (girl draw remove picture) which served the function of a relative clause (picking out the correct member of a set, based on previously mentioned information). Furthermore, in these utterances, the first verb was shorter than the second and shorter than the same verb in parallel unembedded structures. In contrast, homesigners produced similar utterances in embedded and unembedded contexts. They did not reintroduce previously mentioned information or produce reduced verb forms in the embedded context. These results demonstrate that syntactic embedding that is potentially recursive can emerge very early in a language. These embedded predicates, however, may not be widespread, or systematically marked, in homesign systems. This raises the possibility that the emergence of recursive linguistic structure is a consequence of interaction within a language community. These findings pave the way for future work which investigates the syntactic form of these embedded predicates and explores whether multiple levels of embedding are possible.

The Pirahã language has been at the center of recent debates in linguistics, in large part because it is claimed not to exhibit recursion, a purported universal of human language. Here, we present an analysis of a novel corpus of natural Pirahã speech that was originally collected by Dan Everett and Steve Sheldon. We make the corpus freely available for further research. In the corpus, Pirahã sentences have been shallowly parsed and given morpheme-aligned English translations. It is a truism that conceptual understanding of a hypothesis is required for its empirical investigation. However, the concept of recursion as articulated in the context of linguistic analysis has been perennially confused. Nowhere has this been more evident than in attempts to critique and extend Hauseretal's. (2002) articulation. These authors put forward the hypothesis that what is uniquely human and unique to the faculty of language-the faculty of language in the narrow sense (FLN)-is a recursive system that generates and maps syntactic objects to conceptual-intentional and sensory-motor systems. This thesis was based on the standard mathematical definition of recursion as understood by Gödel and Turing, and yet has commonly been interpreted in other ways, most notably and incorrectly as a thesis about the capacity for syntactic embedding. As we explain, the recursiveness of a function is defined independent of such output, whether infinite or finite, embedded or unembedded-existent or non-existent. And to the extent that embedding is a sufficient, though not necessary, diagnostic of recursion, it has not been established that the apparent restriction on embedding in some languages is of any theoretical import. Misunderstanding of these facts has generated research that is often irrelevant to the FLN thesis as well as to other theories of language competence that focus on its generative power of expression. This essay is an attempt to bring conceptual clarity to such discussions as well as to future empirical investigations by explaining three criterial properties of recursion: computability (i.e., rules in intension rather than lists in extension); definition by induction (i.e., rules strongly generative of structure); and mathematical induction (i.e., rules for the principled-and potentially unbounded-expansion of strongly generated structure). Much debate has been stimulated by the recent hypothesis that human language consists of a faculty that is shared with non-human animals (faculty of language in a broad sense; FLB) and a faculty that is specific to human language (faculty of language in a narrow sense; FLN). This hypothesis has encouraged a tendency to emphasize one component of FLN: the cognitive operation of recursion. In consequence, non-syntactical, yet unique, aspects of human language have been neglected. One of these properties consists of vocal learning that enables an abundance of learned syllables. I suggest that FLN is not an independent faculty, but an 'emergent' property, arising from interactions between several other non-syntactical subfaculties of FLB, including vocal learning ability.
