The Future of Railway Electrification and Passenger Operations in North America by I. Lukasietvicz* SUMMARY E LECTRIFICATION and passenger operations are two issues of particular significance to North American railways. Except for the U.S. Northeast corridor, there are practically no electrified railway operations in the US and Canada. Other countries have been engaged in intensive electrification for over 30 years; since 1960, 3100 route miles per year were being electrified world wide. The advantages of electrification are today generally recognized in North America, but the financing and structure of railway industry are such that electrification is not likely to take place without government intervention.
