Hypertension is often associated with metabolic changes. The sustained increase in sympathetic activity is related to increased blood pressure and metabolic changes. Environmental stimuli may be related to increased sympathetic activity, blood pressure, and metabolic changes, especially in genetically predisposed individuals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of fatty acids to physical and mental stress in healthy volunteers and the hemodynamic, hormonal, and metabolic implications of these stimuli. Fifteen healthy individuals with a mean age of 31 ± 7 years, of both sexes, were evaluated. They were assessed at baseline and after combined physical and mental stress (isometric exercise test, Stroop color test). Blood samples were collected at baseline and after stimulation for glucose, insulin, fatty acid, and catecholamine levels. Blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, systemic vascular resistance, and distensibility of the large and small arteries were analyzed. The data obtained at baseline and after stimuli were from the same individual, being the control itself. Compared to baseline, after physical and mental stress there was a statistically significant increase (p < .05) in free fatty acids, norepinephrine, diastolic blood pressure, peripheral vascular resistance, and distensibility of the large and small arteries. In conclusion, the combination of physical and mental stress raised fatty acids, norepinephrine, diastolic blood pressure, and peripheral vascular resistance in healthy individuals.

The etiology of hypertension is various and complex, involving both genetic and behavioral factors. The relationship between psychosocial stress and hypertension has been hypothesized. More and more people experience increased anxiety, depression, and chronic psychosocial stress brought on by globalization, cultural changes, socioeconomic changes, and stress at the work place. Although a plethora of studies have investigated the interaction between psychosocial stress and hypertension, this relationship is still contentious. The objective of this study is twofold. First, a review of recent advancements in our understanding of the relationship between psychosocial stress and hypertension. Second, a meta-analysis aiming to assess the relationship between chronic psychosocial stress and blood pressure. We systematically searched and identified relevant studies from five databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), CQVIP, and the Wanfang Database until April 2016. Eleven studies encompassing 5696 participants were included in the final analysis. Data showed that psychosocial stress was associated with an increased risk of hypertension (OR = 2.40, 95% CI = 1.65-3.49), and hypertensive patients had a higher incidence of psychosocial stress compared to normotension patients (OR = 2.69, 95% CI = 2.32-3.11). Based on our meta-analysis, chronic psychosocial stress may be a risk factor for hypertension. The few cohort and case-control studies on the association between psychosocial stress and hypertension employed variable definition of stressors and the responses, making the meta-analysis difficult. Although we found an association between chronic psychosocial stress and hypertension, more studies are needed to confirm this relationship.

Blood pressures and heart rate increased significantly during speech preparation, delivery and review in all subjects; and during inhalation in smoking women. Oral contraceptive users had higher baseline levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides, and their cholesterol and triglycerides increased more than did nonusers during the speech, triglycerides significantly so. Pill users also had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure increases during delivery of the speech than did nonusers. This study corroborates previous reports that smoking increases cardiovascular responses additively to stress, and is the first report higher increases in triglycerides and cholesterol during stress in pill users. The biological mechanisms underlying the association between psychological stress and hypertension are poorly understood. Increased plasma concentrations of the inflammatory proteins interleukin-6 and fibrinogen are commonly reported both in hypertensive patients and in people subject to chronic psychological stress. Recent laboratory studies have also shown that acute psychological stress increases plasma interleukin-6 and fibrinogen concentrations in healthy individuals.To investigate the relationship between stress-induced inflammatory responses and blood pressure using a longitudinal design.Participants were 153 individuals from the Whitehall II cohort. Blood pressure, plasma interleukin-6 and fibrinogen were assessed in response to an acute laboratory stressor, and ambulatory blood pressure was monitored on a separate day. Three years later, a follow-up day of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was carried out.Individual differences in systolic pressure, fibrinogen and interleukin-6 stress responses predicted ambulatory blood pressure at the 3-year follow-up. Larger increases in ambulatory systolic pressure over the 3-year period were predicted by larger acute fibrinogen and interleukin-6 stress responses, independently of previous ambulatory blood pressure, acute blood pressure stress responses, age, sex, body mass and smoking.Given the important roles of interleukin-6 and fibrinogen in hypertensive pathophysiology, these results indicate that psychological stress cou

We investigated the effect of pre-treatment with intraperitoneal (I.P.) injection of indomethacin, an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis, on psychological stress-induced responses including cardiovascular, thermoregulatory and hormonal responses in free-moving rats. 2. Psychological stress was induced by cage-switch stress. After the rats were placed in the novel environment, blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature significantly increased. Plasma levels of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and prostaglandin E2 were significantly higher 30 min after exposure to stress, in comparison to normal levels. 3. Pre-treatment with I.P. indomethacin significantly suppressed the increases in body temperature induced by cage-switch stress, but had no effect on increases in blood pressure and heart rate induced by this stress. Indomethacin also significantly suppressed the increases in the plasma levels of ACTH and prostaglandin E2 induced by cage-switch stress. 4.
