Official higher education records report that professors in Germany receive performance-related payments and allowances in addition to their basic salary structure.

Professors receive a basic salary and additional performance-related payment. According to the German Association of University Professors and Lecturers ( Deutscher Hochschulverband – DHV), in December 2025 the basic salaries of professors, depending on the land and, where applicable, their level of experience are as follows:
Salary group W 1: junior professor Euro 5,292.82 to Euro 6,011.66
Salary group W 2: professors Euro 6,029.67 to Euro 8,040.79
Salary group W 3: professors Euro 7,247.15 to Euro 9,159.56
It should be noted that in some Länder the so-called annual special payment has been incorporated into the basic salary, and that in Bremen and Hamburg the basic salaries in pay grades W 2 and W 3 are supplemented by a monthly basic performance-related allowance. In Berlin, an allowance of Euro 330 is granted in addition to the W 1 basic salary.
Junior professors, once they have proven themselves as lecturers, receive a non-pensionable allowance of at least Euro 260 per month from the date of the first extension of their fixed-term civil service contract. In Sachsen, instead of this allowance, they are moved to experience level 2 of salary grade W 1.
The professors‘ basic salary in the salary groups W2 to W3 should not be confused with their starting salary. The salary consists of the basic salary and an additional payment which is to be individually negotiated with the institution of higher education, and which can be awarded in accordance with the negotiations regarding the appointment and the continuance in office at the institution in case the professor is offered a chair by another higher education institution ( Bleibeverhandlungen ). The additional payment can also be awarded for special performances in research, teaching, art, conti
