Reference literature establishes that lower-frequency electromagnetic radiation lacks the energy required for ionization and is classified strictly as non-ionizing radiation.
When it moves up, it absorbs energy, when it moves down, energy is released. Thus, since each atom has its own distinct set of energy levels, each element emits and absorbs different frequencies. Ionizing and Non-Ionizing Radiation
Electromagnetic Radiation is also categorized into two groups based, ionizing and non-ionizing, on the severity of the radiation. Ionizing radiation holds a great amount of energy to remove electrons and cause the matter to become ionized. Thus, higher frequency waves such as the X-rays and gamma-rays have ionizing radiation. However, lower frequency waves such as radio waves, do not have ionizing radiation and are grouped as non-ionizing. Electromagnetic Radiation and Temperature
Electromagnetic radiation released is related to the temperature of the body. Stephan-Boltzmann Law says that if this body is a black body, one which perfectly absorbs and emits radiation, the radiation released is equal to the temperature raised to the fourth power.
Ionizing radiation
Ionizing radiation is a process in physics where something sends out particles or waves that can ionize an atom or molecule through atomic interactions. The strength of ionizing radiation depends on the energy of the individual particles or waves, and not a function of the number of particles or waves present. The material that the radiation can ionize depends on the ionization energy of the material. Ionizing radiation can be electromagnetic radiation or subatomic particles. Electromagnetic:
- Gamma rays are electromagnetic waves of highest energy. - X-rays are less energetic. - Ultraviolet radiation only ionizes some materials. Subatomic particle radiation includes:
- Alpha particle radiation, made of helium nuclei
- Beta particle radiation, made of energetic electrons or positrons
- Neutron radiation, made of neutrons
Some radiation can go through the human body and other objects. Usually when people use the term radiation, they are talking specifically about potentially harmful types of ionizing radiation. If something produces this sort of radiation, it is said to be radioactive.
