Abstract The hypothesis of cycles in metal and mineral commodity prices has been firmly documented. Studies in the last years, in the context of the unfolding of the supercycle, have been fruitful in the identification of long cycles. However, a less addressed aspect is their eventual connection with the long economic cycle theory or Kondratiev waves. This article presents the outcomes of an empirical inspection of Kondratiev waves in the real prices of the base metals, iron ore and gold for the period 1900–2017. The results indicate an important level of synchronization between metals prices and the Kondratiev waves. Thus, metal and mineral prices would be affected by the dynamics of long economic cycles (45–60 years). It is suggested to corroborate the empirical findings using the band-pass filters and a decomposition that takes into account these long cycles.

Macroeconomic volatility is an issue that creates major constrains to the process of economic development, affecting long-term decisions and imposing periodic crises (Stiglitz, 2000). This article consists in an empirical exercise focused on understanding economic volatility in developing countries using developed countries as a benchmark. The paper starts by analyzing the evolution and standard deviation of GDP growth during the period 1950 – 2016 for 136 countries. Data comes originally from the Maddison Project Database. In order to look and analyze stable and recurrent patterns of volatility, the same data is filtered into cyclical components. This filtering methodology consists in the use of an Asymmetric Band Pass-Filter (Christiano and Fitzgerald, 2003) to decompose the original time series into band components. Stable economic cycles emerge from market, investment and technological reasons. In order to capture the distinct sources of cycles, we decompose data into four types of cycle and a trend according to their time range: the Kitchin cycle (up to 8 years), the Juglar cycle (8-15 years), the Kuznets Swing (15-30 years), the Kondratiev wave (30-60 years), and a structural residual long-run trend. Attributes related to amplitude, duration and the synchronization between cycles (Harding-Pagan index) are computed for each country and time range. Countries are grouped and compared using Cluster Analysis, resulting in a classification of patterns of volatility.

The study relies on a methodology that combines descriptive analysis and econometric analysis of long-term time series of the U.S. economy during the period from 1800 to 2025, focusing on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data and a set of complementary economic and social indicators such as unemployment, inflation, international trade, and income inequality. The study also employs a range of modern econometric tools for analyzing economic cycles, such as Spectral Analysis, Fourier Analysis, and Wavelet Analysis, to detect long-term cyclical patterns in economic data. The results of the study indicate the presence of long cyclical patterns in the evolution of the U.S. economy that largely correspond to the fundamental hypotheses of Kondratiev Wave Theory. These waves are clearly evident during periods that witnessed major technological transformations such as the Industrial Revolution, the spread of electricity, the rise of the oil and automobile industries, and up to the contemporary digital revolution. The findings also show that periods of economic expansion are often associated with the diffusion of technological innovations and increases in investment and productivity, while recessionary periods coincide with financial crises and economic restructuring. This paper develops the Helioeconomic Theory of Long-Wave Cycles, proposing that Kondratiev waves equal the sum of five consecutive solar cycles: T(K) = Σ5•SC ≈ 55 years. This formula provides the first physically grounded mechanism for long-wave periodicity. A companion trough rule establishes that Kwave troughs coincide with the solar minimum of the third cycle following the K-peak (SC_peak+3), verified with month-level precision for K4 (February 1944, Δ<1 month) and K5 (August 1996, Δ<5 months) against SIDC v2.0 data. A three-level model is developed: Level 1-the K-wave (~55 yr) defines epoch character; Level 2-the solar cycle (~11 yr) times crises within each wave; Level 3intra-cycle structure (Gnevyshev gap, last-surge pattern) provides 4-day to 3-month leading indicators. Statistical analysis of the NBER recession database (n=34, 1857-2020) shows 38% of recession onsets within ±12 months of solar maxima versus 20% expected (χ²=8.7, p=0.003). The Gnevyshev gap is verified as a crisis leading indicator across five solar cycles (SC16-SC23, lead time 1-3 months). A sixth real-time instance is documented: SC25 EISN drop of-166 units on February 24, 2026, preceded the US/Israel strikes on Iran by four days-the shortest lead time in the series. Two concurrent real-time conflict outcomes (Russia-Ukraine: COW failure confirmed; Iran-USA/Israel: preliminary failure ongoing) provide independent verification of the war-cycle mechanism, developed in full in a companion paper (Valkov 2026b).
