Peer-reviewed literature demonstrates that music-associated headbanging can cause specific neurological and cerebrovascular injuries, such as traumatic brain injury and arterial dissections, alongside associated cervical spine conditions.
<h4>Objective</h4>To examine the literature to understand the extent that music-associated head banging (MAHB), a common form of self-expression that involves rhythmically swinging one's head to music, is a risk factor for traumatic brain injury (TBI), to identify areas for further research, and to inform primary prevention strategies.<h4>Data sources</h4>A comprehensive search of several databases from database inception to June 30, 2021, was designed and conducted by an experienced librarian with input from study investigators.<h4>Study selection</h4>Study inclusion criteria encompassed all study designs evaluating TBI associated with MAHB. Two independent reviewers reviewed all titles, abstracts, and full texts.<h4>Data extraction</h4>Data were extracted by 2 independent reviewers, and results were summarized descriptively.<h4>Data synthesis</h4>Of 407 eligible studies, 13 met inclusion criteria. All included studies were case reports from multiple countries describing a case of moderate-severe TBI occurring as a direct consequence of MAHB. Of the individuals reported (n=13), they had 1 or more of the following: traumatic subdural hematoma (n=8), internal carotid artery dissection (n=2), basilar artery thrombosis (n=2), traumatic vertebral artery aneurism (n=1), or intracerebral hemorrhage (n=1). No studies were found involving mild TBI after MAHB.<h4>Conclusions</h4>This scoping review suggests that MAHB is a risk factor for moderate-severe TBI, although the incidence of mild TBI after MAHB remains unknown. Additional research is needed to understand the association of TBI after MAHB through the spectrum of injury severity, including the potential sequelae of multiple subconcussive injuries.

It identifies gaps across physical, and mental well-being, using systematic searches, inclusion criteria, and structured data analysis.<h4>Results</h4>From more than 5,000 references, 47 studies were included, and then categorised into musculoskeletal, vocal, hearing, mental health, mortality, and other issues. Findings highlight specific risks for metal/rock musicians, including injuries, hearing loss, vocal strain, psychological challenges, and elevated mortality rates.<h4>Discussion</h4>This first scoping review synthesises evidence on metal musicians' health, highlighting musculoskeletal risks, vocal resilience, hearing loss, psychological stress, and elevated mortality. Despite shared issues with other musicians, unique practices like headbanging demand targeted research, prevention, and culturally informed approaches.
Dave Mustaine
David Mustaine (born September 13, 1961) is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is the frontman of the heavy metal band Megadeth. Mustaine was also a guitarist and songwriter for Metallica.[1]
Early life
David Mustaine was born in La Mesa, California. His parents are Emily and John Mustaine. His father was of French and Finnish descent and his mother was Jewish.[2][3] He also had three older sisters named Michelle, Suzanne, and Debbie. The Mustaine family were Jehovah's Witnesses.[4]
Personal life
Mustaine married Pamela Anne Casselberry in 1998.[5] They have a son, Justice Mustaine who also plays guitar and has appeared in several local theatrical productions,[6] and a daughter, Electra Nicole Mustaine. In 2018, Mustaine said that his neck and spine condition, known as stenosis, was caused by many years of headbanging.[7]
In June 2019, Mustaine announced that he had been diagnosed with throat cancer.[8]

Whiplash is commonly associated with motor vehicle accidents, usually when the vehicle has been hit in the rear; however, the injury can be sustained in many other ways, including headbanging, bungee jumping and falls. It is one of the most frequently claimed injuries on vehicle insurance policies in certain countries; for example, in the United Kingdom, 430,000 people made an insurance claim for whiplash in 2007, accounting for 14% of every driver's premium. In the United States, it is estimated that more than 65% of all bodily injury claims are whiplash related, translating to around $8 billion in economic costs per year.
Before the invention of the car, whiplash injuries were called "railway spine" as they were noted mostly in connection with train collisions. The first case of severe neck pain arising from a train collision was documented around 1919. The number of whiplash injuries has since risen sharply due to rear-end motor vehicle collisions.
