Abstract This article provides an overview of recent literature and research on word classes, focusing in particular on typological approaches to word classification. The cross‐linguistic classification of word class systems (or parts‐of‐speech systems) presented in this article is based on statements found in grammatical descriptions of some 50 languages, which together constitute a representative sample of the world's languages. It appears that there are both quantitative and qualitative differences between word class systems of individual languages. Whereas some languages employ a parts‐of‐speech system that includes the categories verb, noun, adjective and adverb, other languages may use only a subset of these four lexical categories. Furthermore, quite a few languages have a major word class whose members cannot be classified in terms of the categories verb–noun–adjective–adverb, because they have properties that are strongly associated with at least two of these four traditional word classes (e.g. adjective and adverb). Finally, this article discusses some of the ways in which word class distinctions interact with other grammatical domains, such as syntax and morphology.

In a well-known book, Hawkins (1986), expanding on an original idea by Sapir (1921), attributes a number of typological differences between German and English to the fact that German uses morphological means (i.e. case) to distinguish grammatical relations, whereas English makes use of a strict-SVO word order. Dutch seems problematic to Hawkins’ generalisation, in that neither case nor word order can be used consistently to express the basic grammatical relations. Using verb agreement as an extra parameter, Dutch can be integrated in Hawkins’ typology. In addition, data from Scandinavian languages and Afrikaans indicate that Hawkins’ notion of ‘grammatical word order’ can be replaced by a more precise word order feature, viz. the possibility to place verbs in between subjects and objects in all sentence types.

One of the main factors for non-native speakers having problems in understanding texts written in agglutinative languages is the lack of knowledge of the morphological rules that are used in these languages. The syntactic structures of non-agglutinative languages, which mainly rely on the word order to express the meaning, are often very rigid and do not present any problem for non-native speakers. However, agglutinative languages present a lot of syntactic variation that is mainly solved by the morphology. The use of affixes (prefixes, root vowel changes, infixes and suffixes) to form new words that express a wide range of grammatical meanings, often within a single word, makes the words of agglutinative languages very complex and very long. Thus, the main problem that non-native speakers have when understanding texts written in agglutinative languages is the decoding of the words that are used in these texts. The number of words that a non-native speaker has to learn in order to be able to read and write a text is, therefore, very high, and this number can be even higher if the non-native speakers do not have enough practice in using the morphological patterns of the target language that are needed to form words that are used in the texts that they read.

Grammatical categories encode conceptual domains and contrast them with others. They include the part-of-speech categories of words as well as morphological markers that encode functions like number, case, gender, tense, aspect or voice. In linguistic terminology, morphology deals with the grammar of words (Booij 2012), whereas syntax is concerned with the relationship between words. Words differ regarding the syntactic functions they can assume (part-of-speech category or word class), as well as their morphological structure: a word stem can be combined with inflectional and derivational affixes, or undergo stem changes to encode grammatical functions; and words can also take part in compositional processes to form new, more complex words (compounding, derivation). Grammatical morphology is typically encoded by affixes that combine with content words like verbs, nouns and adjectives. Typological research shows that languages differ widely regarding the categories they differentiate by means of morphology, and the way in which they do it (cf. Ch. 6). The language learning child has to segment complex morphological forms in order to identify the stem, but also in order to identify the function of the grammatical markers, and establish inflectional paradigms. When the system is fully mastered, the speaker is able to use the lexical items as well as the inflectional markers in the appropriate range of constructions, while also observing constraints in the use of these forms. Old English, spoken in England between the 5th and 11th centuries, represents an early and structurally complex stage of the English language. By examining these three elements, the study aims to illustrate both the continuity and the significant transformations that have occurred throughout the historical development of English. The analysis begins with pronunciation, highlighting the systematic nature of Old English phonology, including vowel length distinctions, the presence of diphthongs, and the use of consonantal symbols, including þ (thorn), ð (eth), and æ (ash), which are no longer part of Modern English orthography. These features are contrasted with the less phonologically transparent and more irregular pronunciation system of contemporary English. The paper further investigates noun morphology, emphasizing the inflectional richness of Old English nouns. About 40% of the world’s languages have subject–verb–object order, and about 40% have subject–object–verb order. Extensive work has sought to explain this word order variation across languages. However, the existing approaches are not able to explain coherently the frequency distribution and evolution of word order in individual languages. We propose that variation in word order reflects different ways of balancing competing pressures of dependency locality and information locality, whereby languages favor placing elements together when they are syntactically related or contextually informative about each other. Using data from 80 languages in 17 language families and phylogenetic modeling, we demonstrate that languages evolve to balance these pressures, such that word order change is accompanied by change in the frequency distribution of the syntactic structures that speakers communicate to maintain overall efficiency. Variability in word order thus reflects different ways in which languages resolve these evolutionary pressures. We identify relevant characteristics that result from this joint optimization, particularly the frequency with which subjects and objects are expressed together for the same verb. Our findings suggest that syntactic structure and usage across languages coadapt to support efficient communication under limited cognitive resources.
