This paper investigates possible attrition/change in the gender system of Norwegian heritage language spoken in America. Based on data from 50 speakers in the Corpus of American Norwegian Speech (CANS), we show that the three-gender system is to some extent retained, although considerable overgeneralization of the masculine (the most frequent gender) is attested. This affects both feminine and neuter gender forms, while declension class markers such as the definite suffix remain unaffected. We argue that the gender category is vulnerable due to the lack of transparency of gender assignment in Norwegian. Furthermore, unlike incomplete acquisition, which may result in a somewhat different or reduced gender system, attrition is more likely to lead to general erosion, eventually leading to complete loss of gender.

The historical reason for this is that Bokmål is a development of the Danish written standard, and in Danish (as well as in Swedish and Dutch) the gender system has been reduced from one that distinguished three genders to one that generally only has two. The three-gender system has generally been retained in spoken Norwegian, in virtually all dialects (except Bergen and parts of Oslo). However, some recent studies indicate that a change from a three-gender system to a two-gender system is underway in the Tromsø dialect (Rodina and Westergaard, 2015a ). More about this below.

This region has had extensive language contact with Saami and Kven/Finnish, languages which do not have grammatical gender. The end result of this will presumably be a complete breakdown of gender altogether; i.e., a system without gender distinctions. It is possible that this is already attested in the production of the nine speakers in Group 3, who produce only masculine forms. We would like to speculate about the reasons for this development; i.e., (1) why is grammatical gender vulnerable in heritage language, (2) why are declension class suffixes stable, and (3) why do we not see evidence of a two-gender system the way we predicted?
Our findings partly correspond to what has been found in acquisition and change, i.e., proper gender forms such as the indefinite article are late acquired and prone to change, while the declensional suffixes are early acquired and remarkably stable. But we do not find a two-gender system (common and neuter), which is attested in some children and which is also the result of changes that have taken place in certain varieties of Norwegian. An obvious answer to the first question corresponds to the general account for the late acquisition of gender in Norwegian, viz. the non-transparency of gender assignment.
If this is the case, then we may speculate on a possible difference between incomplete acquisition and attrition with respect to gender: While the former process typically results in a systematic reduction in the gender system (e.g., from three to two genders), the latter affects an existing system in terms of erosion across the board. That is, incomplete acquisition is the cause of a system that is different from the non-heritage variety (and typically reduced), while the result of attrition is an unsystematic breakdown of the system, eventually leading to total loss of grammatical gender.
Some support for our speculation may be found in Schmid's ( 2002 ) important work on German Jews in the United States, who had generally also experienced a severe reduction in the use of their L1 over an extended period of time: The occasional mistakes found in gender assignment in the data did not constitute any rule-based reduction in the gender system of their German 6 . We then turn to the second question, why declensional suffixes are stable in heritage language. The early acquisition of declensional suffixes is generally accounted for by their high frequency and the fact that they are prosodically favored by young children (Anderssen, 2006 ) 7 .

This chapter investigates the evolution of grammatical gender agreement, taken as an instance of paradigmatic and syntagmatic morphological complexity, in a sample of thirty-six languages, organized per sets of closely related languages with different sociolinguistic profiles. Both loss and emergence of gender agreement occur in areas of intense language contact between diverse speech communities. However, given similar contact scenarios, asymmetries in the structure of the bilingual population and/or in the prestige dynamics between the languages in contact tend to favour one development over the other. Loss of gender agreement occurs when the demographically dominant and/or more prestigious language lacks grammatical gender. Conversely, borrowing of gender agreement is favoured when the demographically dominant and/or more prestigious language has grammatical gender. Finally, the data suggest that patterns of gender marking may have important ties to the way in which speakers construe their linguistic identity in opposition to that of their neighbours.

Grammatical agreement means that features associated with one linguistic unit (for example number or gender) become associated with another unit and then possibly overtly expressed, typically with morphological markers. It is one of the key mechanisms used in many languages to show that certain linguistic units within an utterance grammatically depend on each other. Agreement systems are puzzling because they can be highly complex in terms of what features they use and how they are expressed. Moreover, agreement systems have undergone considerable change in the historical evolution of languages. This article presents language game models with populations of agents in order to find out for what reasons and by what cultural processes and cognitive strategies agreement systems arise.
But there are other syntactic mechanisms that are just as common, in particular grammatical agreement [1] , [2] . For example, in the French phrase une belle fille (a beautiful girl), the gender of the noun fille (girl) is feminine and singular, and these features reappear with the adjective belle (beautiful-FEM-SG), and the article une (a-FEM-SG). Languages with strong agreement systems, such as Latin, can have a freer word order because they rely less on sequential ordering to communicate syntactic structure. The variation and complexity of human grammatical agreement systems is fascinating [2] , [3] .
Some languages (such as Japanese) use virtually no agreement whereas others (such as Latin) use it abundantly. The features used by agreement systems also vary across languages. Features such as person, gender, number, animacy, definiteness, case and countability, are typical for Indo-European languages but other languages, such as Bantu languages [4] , use
The linguistic forms that are used to overtly mark agreement features vary considerably as well, and choices may take different aspects of the syntactic context into account [6] . Forms also undergo change, even up to a point where a complex agreement system may erode, as happened in the transition from Old to Middle English [7] . Here we are interested in the question how and why such agreement systems can originate and we thus address one of the key puzzles in the cultural evolution of grammatical language.
We do not want to perform a historical reconstruction of stages in the evolution of agreement systems, which has been carried out by many researchers already [8] , [9] , but to construct theoretical models of the cognitive strategies and cultural processes that are sufficient to see the key characteristics of grammatical agreement arise. The models take the form of a population of agents which play language games about objects perceived in their environment and they have been operationalized and tested in computer simulations. Agent-based models are used with increasing success to study issues in the origins of language [10] – [12] .
What are the characteristic properties of agreement systems that we should target? Obviously we should see a system of markers emerge and we want to understand how the semantic features expressed by these markers become shared in a population. But we are also interested to model phenomena systematically observed in the evolution of grammatical agreement systems in natural languages. Historical linguists have shown that agreement markers invariably derive from reusing existing words, such as pronouns or classifiers [14] , [15] .
It is known from historical data that agreement systems initially arise by reusing existing words as markers [14] , [15] . To understand the underlying mechanisms, we have done a first series of experiments in order to model this process. As a first step we investigate formal markers, i.e. markers without any meaning, in order to establish the basic dynamics and cognitive mechanisms underlying agreement. Then we look at meaningful markers. First, markers invented de novo and next markers that arise by the recruitment of existing words. But the story does not end here.
Figure 14 shows the outcome of a computer simulation of this phonological reduction strategy. An agreement system based on meaningful markers is emerging using the meaningful marker strategy. But after agents reach a stable level of performance (in the experiment this is typically after 200 games per agent), they occasionally introduce phonological reductions with probability and this leads to the erosion of the original markers. Figure 14 i) shows that the average marker length is decreasing from an average of 7 to 4 consonants and vowels, without affecting performance.
These results are significant because they show, for the first time, how phonological reduction carried out by individual agents can lead to marker erosion, without destroying the functioning of the agreement system as a whole and even though there is no central controlling agency ensuring that shared norms are maintained. Coercion Historical linguists have also observed that agreement features generalize so that markers can be applied in situations which do not fit with the original meaning and so the features become purely conventional ( Figure 12 ). Why does this happen?
More generally, the models presented here are a powerful illustration of agent-based modeling, which is a novel way to study the origins of grammar. The grammatical structure of language is seen as originating from the need to handle issues that unavoidably come up when building a symbolic communication system: combatting combinatorial explosions, avoiding semantic ambiguity, improving learnability, decreasing articulatory effort. Agent-based simulations help us to expose these issues in very precise ways and test whether certain strategies can handle them.
