Purpose: Scientific journals play a pivotal role in disseminating research findings, validating methodologies, and promoting academic discourse. In the past decade, technological advancements, global collaborations, and evolving editorial policies have driven significant transformations in journal management. This systematic literature review investigated the key trends, challenges, and opportunities in scientific journal management between 2013 and 2023. Methods: Utilizing a PRISMA-guided methodology, 26 peer-reviewed articles from the Scopus database were analyzed. Results: The findings reveal five primary themes: (1) journal management systems and technological improvements; (2) editorial processes, policies, and best practices; (3) metrics, evaluation, and scientometrics; (4) case studies and implementation; and (5) ethical, social, and eq-uity considerations. Technological innovations, such as artificial intelligence–driven tools, improved plagiarism detection systems, and semantic workflows, have improved operational efficiency. Editorial best practices and evaluation metrics have evolved to promote transparency, accountability, and research integrity. However, persistent challenges include financial sustainability, disparities in gender representation, and maintaining consistency in editorial quality. Conclusion: This review underscores the importance of adaptive strategies and innovative frameworks in ensuring the long-term sustainability, accessibility, and impact of scholarly journals in a rapidly evolving academic publishing landscape.

Digital-based scientific journal management is a crucial element in strengthening academic culture and improving the quality of higher education publications. However, student involvement in journal governance remains limited, particularly in understanding editorial workflows, using Open Journal Systems (OJS), applying publication ethics, and utilizing supporting technologies such as reference management tools and editorial artificial intelligence (AI). This community service program aims to enhance students’ competencies in scientific journal management at the Institut Bisnis dan Informatika (IBI) Kesatuan Bogor through practice-oriented training and mentoring. The program employed an experiential learning and capacity-building approach, including OJS 3 technical workshops, editorial process simulations, focus group discussions (FGDs), and competency evaluations using pre-tests and post-tests. Participants consisted of students from various study programs with an interest in academic writing and scholarly publishing. The evaluation results indicate a significant improvement in participants’ competencies, with average scores increasing from 52.3% before the program to 86.7% after its implementation. The most substantial improvements were observed in OJS mastery, understanding of publication ethics, and the use of AI-based tools for proofreading and plagiarism detection. Furthermore, 82.5% of participants expressed readiness to serve as assistant editors for institutional journals, and 87.5% demonstrated increased motivation to write and publish scientific articles. This program contributes to strengthening students’ academic literacy, enhancing institutional journal management capacity, and supporting the implementation of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy, and the achievement of higher education Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).   Keywords: community service; scientific journal management; OJS; academic literacy; students; scholarly publishing.

Context Manuscript management systems (MMS) serve as centralized platforms for managing the submission, review, and publication of scholarly articles, thereby streamlining the publishing process. The submission process is crucial for usability analysis, as it represents the initial stage of interaction with users’ profiles. While many researchers emphasize the importance of making these systems more user-friendly, there is a notable lack of studies evaluating the usability of prominent MMS and offering solutions for identified usability issues. Aim This study aims to identify usability issues faced by authors working with three prominent MMS—Editorial Manager, ScholarOne, and Open Journal Systems (OJS)—and measure user satisfaction levels for the evaluated systems and propose usability guidelines to improve system effectiveness and ease of use. Method A multi-case usability study was conducted employing Think-Aloud Protocol (TAP) and System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire to capture usability issues and user satisfaction levels. Results All three systems exhibited notable usability issues in areas such as submission, user registration, password recovery, and profile updating—violating several usability heuristics, e.g., match between system and the real world, help and documentation, visibility of system status.
