Desalination using renewable energy offers a route to transform our incumbent linear consumption model to a circular one. This transition will also shift desalination from large-scale centralized coastal facilities toward modular distributed inland plants. This new scale of desalination can be satisfied using solar energy to decarbonize water production, but additional considerations, such as storage and inland brine management, become important. Here, we evaluate the levelized cost of water for 16 solar desalination system configurations at 2 different salinities. For fossil fuel-driven plants, we find that zero-liquid discharge is economically favorable to inland brine disposal. For renewable desalination, we discover that solar-thermal energy is superior to photovoltaics due to low thermal storage cost and that energy storage, despite being expensive, outperforms water storage as the latter has a low utilization factor. The analysis also yields a promising outlook for solar desalination by 2030 as solar generation and storage costs decrease.

Desalination is becoming crucial to meet the increasing global demand for potable water. Despite its benefits, desalination produces reject brine, a highly concentrated saline byproduct, which poses substantial environmental risks if not managed properly. It contains high levels of salts and other potentially harmful compounds, which, when discharged into oceans or land, can disrupt habitats, degrade soil quality, and harm biodiversity, creating serious environmental challenges. In response to these challenges, this study investigated various uses for reject brine, aiming to reduce its environmental footprint and explore its potential applications. This review paper synthesizes findings from previous studies on the disposal, management, and applications of reject brine in fields such as concrete production, road construction, and ground stabilization. In addition, this review highlights the potential cost savings and resource efficiency resulting from the utilization of reject brine, as well as the mitigation of environmental impacts associated with traditional disposal methods. This paper also provides a comprehensive overview of existing technologies and approaches used to utilize reject brine in various industries, including construction. This review contributes to the growing body of knowledge on environmentally friendly solutions for reject brine, emphasizing its potential role in supporting sustainable development goals through resource reutilization and waste minimization. The study also highlights current research gaps that are still unaddressed, hindering the complete realization of the full potential of reject brine as a sustainable resource.

Brine, also known as concentrate, is the by-product of the desalination process that has an adverse impact on the environment due to its high salinity. Hence, viable and cost-effective brine management systems are needed to reduce environmental pollution. Currently, various disposal methods have been practiced, including surface water discharge, sewer discharge, deep-well injection, evaporation ponds and land application. However, these brine disposal methods are unsustainable and restricted by high capital costs and non-universal application. Nowadays, brine treatment is considered one of the most promising alternatives to brine disposal, since treatment results in the reduction of environmental pollution, minimization of waste volume and production of freshwater with high recovery. This review article evaluates current practices in brine management, including disposal methods and treatment technologies. Based upon the side-by-side comparison of technologies, a brine treatment technology framework is introduced to outline the Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) approach through high freshwater recovery and wastewater volume minimization. Furthermore, an overview of brine characteristics and its sources, as well as its negative impact on the environment is discussed. Finally, the paper highlights future research areas for brine treatment technologies aiming to enhance the effectiveness and viability of desalination.
