Abstract The function of language in communication is often likened to a mechanistic process, wherein individuals consciously make linguistic choices to facilitate effective communication, aligning with their intended message. One such strategic linguistic tool is the modification of noun phrases (NPs), enabling the conveyance of intricate meanings. Notably, the complexity of NP modification in newspaper reporting surpasses that of everyday communication. This paper seeks to delve into the dynamics between noun phrase heads and modifiers, establishing why certain relationships are favoured over others concerning government or modification relations in news reporting. Drawing data from esteemed newspapers—The Sun, The Nation, Vanguard, and The Punch—a corpus of twenty NP samples, five from each publication, was meticulously examined. The structural formations of the NPs and the dependency relations of the modifiers (MODs) within them were analysed, considering both government and modification relations. Employing a blend of qualitative and quantitative techniques, this study illuminates how newspaper reporters deliberately prefer specific MOD choices over others. Each MOD within an NP may either be obligatory or optional, forming either a government or modification relation with its head. This research underscores the importance of understanding the necessity of MODs of nouns, emphasising the pivotal role of the head noun in selecting and determining the governing status of modifiers within noun phrase modification. Additionally, it highlights how the form of the modifier is contingent upon the relationship with the head noun, whether through agreement (government) or modification relations.
