Light offers unique opportunities for controlling the activity of materials and biosystems with high spatiotemporal resolution. Molecular photoswitches are chromophores that undergo reversible isomerization between different states upon irradiation with light, allowing a convenient means to control their influence over the system of interest. However, a significant limitation of classical photoswitches is the requirement to initiate the switching in one or both directions using deleterious UV light with poor tissue penetration. Red-shifted photoswitches are hence in high demand and have attracted keen recent research interest. In this Review, we highlight recent progress towards the development of visible- and NIR-activated photoswitches characterized by distinct photochromic reaction mechanisms. We hope to inspire further endeavors in this field, allowing the full potential of these tools in biotechnology and materials chemistry applications to be realized.

Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA) photoswitches have gained a lot of attention since their discovery in 2014. Their negative photochromism, visible light absorbance, synthetic tunability, and the large property changes between their photoisomers make them attractive candidates over other commonly used photoswitches for use in materials with responsive or adaptive properties. The development of such materials and their translation into advanced technologies continues to widely impact forefront materials research, and DASAs have thus attracted considerable interest in the field of visible-light responsive molecular switches and dynamic materials. Despite this interest, there have been challenges in understanding their complex behavior in the context of both small molecule studies and materials. Moreover, incorporation of DASAs into polymers can be challenging due to their incompatibility with the conditions for most common polymerization techniques. In this review, therefore, we examine and critically discuss the recent developments and challenges in the field of DASA-containing polymers, aiming at providing a better understanding of the interplay between the properties of both constituents (matrix and photoswitch). The first part summarizes current understanding of DASA design and switching properties. The second section discusses strategies of incorporation of DASAs into polymers, properties of DASA-containing materials, and methods for studying switching of DASAs in materials. We also discuss emerging applications for DASA photoswitches in polymeric materials, ranging from light-responsive drug delivery systems, to photothermal actuators, sensors and photoswitchable surfaces. Last, we summarize the current challenges in the field and venture on the steps required to explore novel systems and expand both the functional properties and the application opportunities of DASA-containing polymers.

In recent years thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), the demand for the development of miniaturized and wearable sensors has skyrocketed. Among them, novel sensors for wearable medical devices are mostly needed. The aim of this review is to summarize the advancements in this field from current points of view, focusing on sensors embedded into textile fabrics. Indeed, they are portable, lightweight, and the best candidates for monitoring biometric parameters. The possibility of integrating chemical sensors into textiles has opened new markets in smart clothing. Many examples of these systems are represented by color-changing materials due to their capability of altering optical properties, including absorption, reflectance, and scattering, in response to different external stimuli (temperature, humidity, pH, or chemicals). With the goal of smart health monitoring, nanosized sol-gel precursors, bringing coupling agents into their chemical structure, were used to modify halochromic dyestuffs, both minimizing leaching from the treated surfaces and increasing photostability for the development of stimuli-responsive sensors. The literature about the sensing properties of functionalized halochromic azo dyestuffs applied to textile fabrics is reviewed to understand their potential for achieving remote monitoring of health parameters. Finally, challenges and future perspectives are discussed to envisage the developed strategies for the next generation of functionalized halochromic dyestuffs with biocompatible and real-time stimuli-responsive capabilities.

Naphthopyran molecular switches undergo a ring-opening reaction upon external stimulation to generate intensely colored merocyanine dyes. Their unique modularity and synthetic accessibility afford exceptional control over their properties and stimuli-responsive behavior. Commercial applications of naphthopyrans as photoswitches in photochromic ophthalmic lenses have spurred an extensive body of work exploring naphthopyran-merocyanine structure-property relationships. The recently discovered mechanochromic behavior of naphthopyrans has led to their emergent application in the field of polymer mechanochemistry, enabling advances in the design of force-responsive materials as well as fundamental insights into mechanochemical reactivity. The structure-property relationships established in the photochemical literature serve as a convenient blueprint for the design of naphthopyran molecular force probes with precisely tuned properties. On the other hand, the mechanochemical reactivity of naphthopyran diverges in many cases from the conventional photochemical pathways, resulting in unexpected properties and opportunities for deeper understanding and innovation in polymer mechanochemistry. Here, we highlight the features of the naphthopyran scaffold that render it a powerful platform for the design of mechanochromic materials and review recent advances in naphthopyran mechanochemistry.

Niobium oxide (Nb2O5) is a versatile semiconductor material with photochromic properties. This study investigates the local structure of noncrystalline, short-range-ordered niobium oxide synthesized via a sol–gel method. X-ray atomic pair distribution function analysis unravels the structural arrangements within the noncrystalline materials at a local scale. In the following, in situ scattering and diffraction experiments elucidate the heat-induced structure transformation of the amorphous material into crystalline TT-Nb2O5 at 550 °C. In addition, the effect of photocatalytic conditions on the structure of the material was investigated by exposing the short-range-ordered and crystalline materials to ultraviolet light, resulting in a reversible color change from white to dark brown or blue. This photochromic response is due to the reversible elongation of the nearest Nb–O neighbors, as shown by local structure analysis based on in situ PDF analyses. Optical band gap calculations based on the ultraviolet–visible spectra collected for both the short-range-ordered and crystalline materials show that the band gap values reduced for the darkened materials return to their initial state after bleaching. Furthermore, electron energy loss spectroscopy reveals the reduction of Nb5+ to Nb4+ centers as a persistent effect. The study establishes a correlation between the band gap and the structure of niobium oxide, providing insights into the structure-performance relation at the atomic level.

Here, we report a novel invisible ink with different decay times based on thin films with different molar ratios of spiropyran (SP)/Si, which allows the encryption of messages over time. Nanoporous silica has been found to be an excellent substrate to improve the solid photochromism of spiropyran, but the hydroxyl groups of silica have a serious effect on fade speeds. The density of silanol groups in silica has an influence on the switching behavior of spiropyran molecules, as they stabilize the amphiphilic merocyanine isomers and thus slow down the fading process from the open to the closed form. Here, we investigate the solid photochromic behavior of spiropyran by sol-gel modification of the silanol groups and explore its potential application in UV printing and dynamic anticounterfeiting. To extend its applications, spiropyran is embedded in organically modified thin films prepared by the sol-gel method. Notably, by using the different decay times of thin films with different SP/Si molar ratios, time-dependent information encryption can be realized. It provides an initial "false" code, which does not display the required information, and only after a given time will the encrypted data appear.

Photochromism Photochromism is the reversible change of color upon exposure to light. It is a transformation of a chemical species (photoswitch) between two forms through the absorption of electromagnetic radiation(photoisomerization), where each form has a different absorption spectrum. This reversible structural or geometric change in photochromic molecules affects their electronic configuration, molecular strain energy, and other properties. ## History In 1867, Carl Julius Fritzsche reported the concept of photochromism, indicating that orange tetracene solution lost its color in daylight but regained it in darkness. Later, similar behavior was observed by both Edmund ter Meer and Phipson. Ter Meer documented the color change of the potassium salt of dinitroethane, which appeared red in daylight and yellow in the dark. Phipson also recorded that a painted gatepost appeared black during the day and white at night due to a zinc pigment, likely lithopone. In 1899, Willy Markwald, who studied the reversible color change of 2,3,4,4-tetrachloronaphthalen-1(4H)-one in the solid state, named this phenomenon "phototropy". However, this term was later considered misleading due to its a
