Abstract The blood flow to a given brain region increases as the level of neural activity is augmented. Hence mapping of variations in regional cerebral blood flow affords a means of imaging the activity of various brain regions during various types of brain work. The paper summarizes the patterns of cortical activity seen during various language functions, emphasizing the practically symmetrical involvement in both hemispheres. A case of auditive agnosia (with complete cortical word deafness but preserved pure tone thresholds) is presented. The patient’s normal speech constitutes evidence that auditory feedback (absent in his case) is not a prerequisite for speaking.

In this study, we investigated whether there were differences between the processing of Chinese proper nouns and common nouns in the left and that in the right hemispheres of the brain by using a visual half-field technique. The experimental materials included four types of proper nouns (people’s names, landmark names, country names, and brand names), four types of common nouns (animals, fruits and vegetables, tools, and abstract nouns), and pseudowords. Participants were asked to judge whether target words that had been quickly presented in their left or right visual field were meaningful words. The results showed that there was a distinction between the processing of the two types of words in the left and right hemispheres. There was no significant difference in the processing of the two types of nouns in the right hemisphere, but the left hemisphere processed common nouns more effectively than proper nouns. Furthermore, the processing difference of proper nouns between the two hemispheres was less than that of common nouns, suggesting that proper nouns have a smaller lateralization effect than common nouns.

The Hemispheric Disparity Theory conceptualizes one facet of consciousness, defined as the "conscious-mind" experience. Rather than a unified agent, conscious experience arises from the dynamic interplay between a left hemisphere specialized in order and abstraction through dynamic temporal modeling, and a right hemisphere specialized in contextual integration, coherence, and model updating through attentional networks. Drawing on evidence from diverse classical neuropsychological and modern neuroimaging studies, the hemispheric disparity model proposes, in Part I, how the unified conscious experience emerges from two structurally distinct cerebral hemispheres. In Part II, a demonstration of how information processing progresses to a remarkable form of asymmetry through a special structural arrangement that begins at the lower levels of cortical hierarchies. Finally, in Part III, the article proposes how the disparate hemispheric system operates to generate cumulative concept development unique to the conscious-mind. Simple mathematical concepts are used to illustrate this. This model offers potential for further development on multiple levels, including clinical, philosophical, and modern artificial learning systems.

Cognitive task influence on relative hemispheric motor control: mouth asymmetry and lateral eye movements. While strictly verbal cognitive tasks showed a strong left-hemisphere dominance, the presence of visualization and emotion in cognitive tasks resulted in increased involvement of the right hemisphere in motor control of speech as measured by mouth asymmetry. Spontaneous smiles showed right-hemisphere dominance. Lateral eye movements showed an unexpected shift to left gaze during speech which may suggest a dual task interference between speech and gaze motor control. Failure to confirm a spatial ability impairment in persons with evidence of right hemisphere speech capability. Levy hypothesized that persons lacking strict left hemispheric dominance for language processing should be impaired in spatial processing ability. This leads to the expectation that left-handers, because they are more often not strictly left hemisphere dominant for language, would, as a group, be impaired in spatial ability relative to right-handers. Evidence regarding this hypothesis has been inconsistent. The present study systematically examined the effects of handedness, sex, and hemispheric language dominance on verbal and spatial ability in 80 right-handed and 71 left-handed university students. Males were found to be superior to females in all handedness-hemispheric language dominance groups on the spatial ability measure. No effects of handedness or hemispheric lanaguage dominance nor interactions of these factors obtained for either verbal or spatial ability measures. It was concluded that the hypothesis of verbal-spatial processing incompatibility within the same hemisphere was not supported.

Verbal processing by the brain. Reitan and Wolfson (1985) have proposed a model of brain-behavior relationships which postulates a three-part organization of higher-level aspects of central processing: Verbal and related language functions (mainly left hemisphere), visual-spatial and related abilities (mainly right hemisphere), and conceptual abilities (both hemispheres). Three groups of subjects (controls, left cerebral lesions, and right cerebral lesions) and two strictly verbal tests (the Word Finding Test and the Vocabulary subtest from the Wechsler Scale) were used as a partial test of this model. Left cerebral lesions impaired Vocabulary scores but right cerebral lesions had little if any impairing effect. However, on the Word Finding Test, which has a strong conceptual requirement in addition to the verbal requirement, the group with left cerebral lesions continued to show striking impairment but the group with right cerebral lesions also showed significant impairment as compared to the control group.
