Abstract Esophageal carcinoma (EC) is a serious malignancy and its epidemiologic etiology is not fully explained. We performed this review to investigate the association between teeth loss and teeth brushing and the risk of EC. A systematic search was conducted to identify all relevant studies. The Q test and I 2 statistic were used to examine between-study heterogeneity. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were considered by fixed or random effects models. Furthermore, we conducted subgroup analyses based on study design, the studies’ geographic regions and case type of origin. Modified Egger linear regression test was used to estimate publication bias. Ten articles were included. Pooled analyses indicated that teeth loss was associated with an increased risk of EC for Asians (OR, 1.52; 95% CI: 1.30, 1.78) and high frequency of teeth brushing was associated with a lower incidence of EC (OR, 0.62; 95%CI: 0.43, 0.89). Subgroup analyses showed consistent results and no publication bias existed. Teeth loss and teeth brushing play potential roles in the progressing of EC. People should take care of their oral health in daily life. And large well-designed researches are needed to fully describe the association between teeth health and EC risk.
ABSTRACT Introduction Dental care can improve athletes’ performance, promoting oral health and preventing changes that could disrupt their sports routine. Objective To evaluate the dental conditions, habits, and oral health care of volleyball athletes, and their knowledge of the importance of oral health in sports performance. Methods Sixty-four male athletes participated in the study: 40 from the basic categories (16 ± 3 years) and 24 professionals (25 ± 5 years). For the assessment of oral conditions, changes in the temporomandibular joint, history of facial and dental trauma, and the presence of malocclusions and orthodontic treatment were verified. Hygiene was measured by the visible plaque index. To determine the athletes’ oral hygiene, they were asked how many times per day they brushed their teeth, flossed their teeth, or used oral mouthwash. Finally, we evaluated the athletes’ opinions concerning the importance of oral health and sports performance. Data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney and Fisher’s Exact tests, with a significance level of 5%. Results For most of the parameters evaluated, similar results were found between professional and baseline athletes (p> 0.05). However, for the parameters “flossing” (p = 0.0027) and “facial/dental trauma” (p = 0.0444), significant differences were observed (p <0.05) between the categories of athletes. Conclusion We conclude that professional athletes are more prone to facial/dental trauma, and that the presence of a dental surgeon to assist the team improves athletes’ overall oral health. Several epidemiological studies suggested that frequency of tooth brushing may be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, but the results remain inconclusive. Therefore, the aim of this study was to synthesize frequency of tooth brushing and CVD risk using meta-analysis. Science Direct, PubMed, CINAHL, and OVID were searched through October 15, 2022. The random-effects model was used to quantitatively assess the combined risk estimation. In addition, we performed the sensitivity analysis to evaluate the robustness of the study results by excluding the included studies one by one. A total of 9 cohort studies containing 10 reports with 803,019 individuals were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled results showed that compared with the lowest brushing frequency, the highest brushing frequency (relative risk = 0.85, 95% confidence interval: 0.80-0.90) significantly reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease. There was moderate heterogeneity among included studies (<i>P</i> = .002, I<sup>2</sup> = 65.4%). The exclusion of any one study did not materially change the combined risk estimates. Our meta-analysis supported the hypothesis that higher frequency of tooth brushing can reduce the risk of CVD, which may have important implications for conducting research on the prevention strategies of CVD.
Oral hygiene refers to taking care and maintaining the cleanness of gum and teeth; a good oral hygiene practice promotes better oral health in general. Oral hygiene is the top public health concern of the population. Tooth brushing is a technique to keep oral hygiene from related complications. Therefore, this study provides the pooled prevalence of tooth brushing practice in Ethiopia. Databases searched for articles systematically across PubMed, Google Scholar, Hinari, EMBASE, and African Journals Online. Two reviewers independently conducted the selection, screening, reviewing, and data extraction using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and used the Joanna Briggs Institute prevalence critical appraisal tools to assess the quality of evidence. All studies conducted in Ethiopia from 2010 to 2020, reporting tooth-brushing practices extracted for and imported into the Comprehensive meta-analysis version 3.0 for further analysis. Beggs and Eggers's tests evaluated for publication bias with Higgins's method evaluated for heterogeneity. A random-effects meta-analysis model with a 95% confidence interval was computed to estimate the pooled effect size (prevalence). Furthermore, the authors employed subgroup analysis based on the study area and sample size. After reviewing 36, 10 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria, and were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of tooth brushing practice was 12.2% (95% CI 7.6-19.2%). The review reported a lower level of tooth-brushing practice in Ethiopia. We recommended that special attention should be given to the oral hygiene of the Ethiopian people.
BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are among the most prevalent non-communicable conditions globally, with inadequate toothbrushing contributing to high rates of dental caries and periodontal disease. International guidelines recommend brushing at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, yet adherence varies across regions. In Saudi Arabia, where oral disease burden is high, national data on brushing practices remain fragmented. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the prevalence of twice-daily toothbrushing among Saudi adults. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted up to April 2024, supplemented by manual screening of references. Observational studies reporting toothbrushing frequency among Saudi adults (≥ 18 years) were eligible. Data extraction was performed independently, and risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute appraisal tool. Pooled prevalence estimates were calculated using random-effects meta-analysis, with subgroup analyses by gender and brushing duration. RESULTS: Twenty-nine studies (n = 17,734) met inclusion criteria, of which 18 studies (n = 11,865) contributed to the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of twice-daily toothbrushing was 44.6% (95% CI: 37.6–51.8%), with high heterogeneity (I² = 98.3%). Subgroup analysis revealed gender disparities, with 25.8% of females brushing twice daily compared to 12.2% of males. Data from two studies indicated that 45.3% of adults adhered to the recommended two-minute brushing duration. Funnel plot and statistical tests indicated no significant publication bias. CONCLUSION: Fewer than half of Saudi adults practice twice-daily toothbrushing, with notable gender and regional disparities. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted oral health promotion, particularly among men, and support the integration of structured awareness and prevention strategies into national health policies.
Abstract Objectives To investigate the association between oral hygiene behaviors (toothbrushing, water rinsing after brushing, interproximal cleaning, and adjunctive use of fluoride products) and recent caries (past 24 months) in a random sample of patients in Northwest PRECEDENT practices. Methods Practitioner‐members of Northwest PRECEDENT, a dental practice‐based research network, conducted a longitudinal study on caries risk assessment. At baseline, patients completed a questionnaire on oral self‐care, snacking, health, and socio‐demographics. A dental examination recorded readily visible heavy plaque and decayed, missing, and filled teeth; chart review captured new caries and treatments in the previous 24 months. Bivariate and multiple generalized estimating equations (GEE) log‐linear regression models stratified by age‐groups were used to relate oral hygiene behaviors to the primary outcome of mean dental caries in the past 24 months on data from 1400 patients in 63 practices. The primary exposure of interest was fluoride toothbrushing frequency. Results Fluoride toothbrushing once per day or twice or more per day by patients 9–17 was significantly associated with a 50% lower mean caries rate compared with fluoride toothbrushing less than once per day, after adjustment for covariates [rate ratios (RR) = 0.5; 95% confidence intervals (CI) = 0.3–0.8]. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the association between dental clinical measures and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) together with the potential mediating role of sociodemographic factors and oral health behaviours on this association in a group of Iraqi children. Methods The target population for this cross-sectional study consisted of 372 primary school children aged 8-10 years in the city of Kut, Iraq, during the year 2022. The participants were selected using a multi-stage random sampling technique. Detailed information about the children was collected through a comprehensive questionnaire that included demographic characteristics, oral health-related behaviors, the Arabic version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire for 8-10-year-olds (CPQ8-10), and parental knowledge regarding oral health. Additionally, clinical dental evaluations were conducted, which included assessments of decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (DMFS, dmfs) as well as teeth (DMFT, dmft). Simplified oral hygiene index (OHI-S), bleeding on probing (BOP), and the community periodontal index (CPI) were also recorded for each participant using the recommended methodology by the World Health Organization (WHO). It has been reported that people who brush their teeth frequently might be more health-conscious and maintain healthier lifestyle habits. The relationship between obesity and oral health behavior in childhood is unknown, however. The aim of the present study was to fill this gap by investigating obesity and factors associated with oral health behavior in Japanese primary and junior high school students. A total of 475 primary school students (fifth-grade, age 10-11 years) and 408 junior high school students (first-grade, age 12-13 years) were included. All the participants underwent a regular health check-up and completed a self-reported questionnaire. The data thus obtained were subjected to multiple logistic regression analyses to identify the relationship between obesity and factors associated with oral health behavior. In primary school students, a dislike of physical activity was the only factor showing a significant association with obesity (p<0.05). In addition, however, tooth brushing <2 times per day and a lack of regular clinical dental care showed a significant association with obesity in junior high school students (p<0.05). The present results suggest a significant association between regular clinical dental care and tooth brushing and obesity in junior school students.
