Bizarre mental images have been advocated as ‘artificial’ memory aids for students since the time of the ancient Greek teachers of rhetoric, yet the few recent experiments in this area, mostly on adults, have generally found bizarreness to be unimportant. In this experiment, 108 12‐year‐olds recalled words from sentences they had rated as producing bizarre images significantly better than they recalled the same words from sentences rated as producing ordinary images. This was true for both expected and unexpected immediate recall, and for unexpected long‐term recall (
P
< 0·01 in all cases). A tentative explanation is offered in terms of a cognitive approach to perception itself, suggesting that bizarre images might have properties similar to Berlyne's ‘collative’ stimulus variables, involving subjects at something close to ‘the optimum level of arousal’.

In all experiments, subjects were presented with noun pairs that were embedded within bizarre or common sentences in a mixed-list design. None of the experiments produced a bizarreness effect for cued recall; however, for two of the experiments, the bizarre noun pairs were remembered significantly better than the common pairs for free recall. To determine if these differences were due to the storage or retrieval of the items, a multinomial model for the analysis of imagery mediation in paired-associate learning was developed and applied to the data from the experiments. The model revealed that bizarre sentences benefited the retrieval of the noun pairs but not their storage within memory. The empirical and modeling results are discussed relative to previous findings and theories on the bizarreness effect.

Previous research has demonstrated that bizarre elaboration can facilitate free recall despite the fact that such elaboration evokes less vivid mental imagery than does common elaboration. The present study investigated the possibility that the nonvividness of bizarre imagery enhances the distinctiveness of a bizarre representation and thus serves as a cue that facilitates recall. The results indicated that bizarre information required significantly more time to comprehend and image, and that bizarre imagery was significantly less vivid than common imagery. However, a correlational analysis indicated that the relationship between bizarre and common vividness differences and bizarre and common recall differences was not in the direction predicted by the nonvividness-cue hypothesis. It is concluded that bizarre-imagery nonvividness is related to a reduction in the magnitude of the bizarre recall advantage.
Bizarre imagery in paired-associate learning: an effective mnemonic aid with mixed context, delayed testing, and self-paced conditions. Recent findings have indicated that bizarre imagery can be an effective mnemonic aid with delayed testing, a context of mixed materials, and an adequate stimulus presentation pace, so we hypothesized an interaction among these variables. Using a variation of the McDaniel and Einstein 1986 methodology, 40 undergraduates were each randomly presented three paired-associate lists (i.e., normal, bizarre, and mixed). The sentences within each list consisted of stimulus-response pairs of high-imagery nouns. 20 of these subjects participated in an immediate cued-recall condition for each list while the remaining ones were tested after a 1-wk. retention interval. Subjects were further subdivided depending on whether the presentation pace was forced or not. As predicted, a three-way interaction was found, with bizarre imagery benefiting immediate recall under a combined mixed context, self-paced condition; with delayed recall, however, context was the determining factor in performance (and not presentation pace).
To assess further the effectiveness of bizarre imagery, undergraduates were exposed to a variety of paired-associate, stimulus contexts (unmixed normal, unmixed bizarre, and mixed) and then were tested at one of three retention intervals (0, 3, or 5 days). Consistent with our earlier findings, elements within the mixed context were recalled the best at both the 0- and 3-day intervals. Interestingly, the unmixed bizarre items improved performance as much as mixed ones when testing occurred at 5 days, suggesting that bizarre-only elements needed sufficient time to develop their distinctive memory traces.
