We present a substantially implemented model of description of the inflectional morphology of Arabic nouns, with special attention to the management of dictionaries and other language resources by Arabic-speaking linguists. Our model includes broken plurals (BPs), i.e. plurals formed by modifying the stem. It is based on the traditional notions of root and pattern of Semitic morphology. However, as compared to traditional Arabic morphology, it keeps the formal description of inflection separate from that of derivation and semantics. As traditional Arabic dictionaries, the updatable dictionary is structured in lexical entries for lemmas, and the reference spelling is fully diacritized. In our model, morphological analysis of Arabic text is performed directly with a dictionary of words and without morphophonological rules. Our taxonomy for noun inflection is simple, orderly and detailed. We simplify the taxonomy of singular patterns by specifying vowel quantity as v or vv, and ignoring vowel quality. Root alternations and orthographical variations are encoded independently from patterns and in a factual way, without deep roots or morphophonological or orthographical rules. Nouns with a triliteral BP are classified according to 22 patterns subdivided into 90 classes, and nouns with a quadriliteral BP according to 3 patterns subdivided into 70 classes. These 160 classes become 300 inflectional classes when we take into account inflectional variations that affect only the singular. We provide a straightforward encoding scheme that we applied to 3 200 entries of BP nouns.

This paper intends to present a large-scale dataset for Arabic morphology from a cognitive point of view considering the uniqueness of the root–pattern phenomenon. The center of attention is focused on studying this singularity in terms of estimating associative relationships between roots as a higher level of abstraction for words meaning, and all their potential occurrences with multiple morpho-phonetic patterns. A major advantage of this approach resides in providing a novel balanced large-scale language resource, which can be viewed as an instantiated global root–pattern network consisting of roots, patterns, stems, and particles, estimated statistically for studying the morpho-phonetic level of cognition of Arabic. In this context, this paper asserts that balanced root-distribution is an additional significant key criterion for evaluating topic coverage in an Arabic corpus. Furthermore, some additional novel probabilistic morpho-phonetic measures and their distribution have been estimated in the form of root and pattern entropies besides bi-directional conditional probabilities of bi-grams of stems, roots, and particles. Around 29.2 million webpages of ClueWeb were extracted, filtered from non-Arabic texts, and converted into a large textual dataset containing around 11.5 billion word forms and 9.3 million associative relationships. As this dataset is predominantly considering the root–pattern phenomenon in Semitic languages, the acquired data might be significant support for researchers interested in studying phenomena of Arabic such as visual word cognition, morpho-phonetic perception, morphological analysis, and cognitively motivated query expansion, spell-checking, and information retrieval. Vocabulary instruction is among the most decisive factors in foreign language acquisition. One of the primary challenges encountered in teaching Arabic as a foreign language (TAFL) is the expansion of lexicon and the retention of acquired vocabulary in long-term memory. For learners familiar with the Indo-European language family, the systematic structure of Arabic—a member of the Semitic family based on the root-and-pattern system—may initially appear complex; however, it offers a powerful didactic tool for lexical acquisition. This is primarily because the learning load increases in Indo-European languages if morphological organization is not systematically utilized in vocabulary teaching. This research aims to examine the efficacy of using 'root letters' and the 'pattern system' (awzan), which constitute the morphological backbone of the language, as an active instructional strategy in Arabic vocabulary teaching processes. Following a presentation of the structural characteristics of the Arabic root-and-pattern system, the study discusses the impact on student achievement when words are presented within a morphological framework rather than being memorized as isolated, independent units. Findings obtained through a literature review indicate that teaching the logic of roots and patterns facilitates learners' ability to infer the meanings of unknown words, enhances their word-derivation skills, and contributes significantly to the formation of a mental lexicon. In this context, it is concluded that the root-based instructional approach in Arabic not only streamlines the learning process but also provides a model that can inspire innovative approaches to vocabulary teaching methods in general foreign language education. 4 THE EFFICACY OF THE ROOT-AND-PATTERN SYSTEM IN VOCABULARY ACQUISITION: A MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF ARABIC Veredas do Direito, v.23, e235622 – 2026 structure reinforces the learnability and systematic nature of the language by enabling lexical items to be perceived as 'mathematical formulas'. Arabic is one of the oldest living languages, serving as the official language of more than twenty states and as the liturgical language of over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide. This article provides a scientific analysis of the linguistic nature and unique structural features of Arabic, focusing specifically on its root-and-pattern morphological system, its inflective morphology, and its incomparable semantic richness. The article examines the phenomenon of diglossia in the Arabic language, the productivity of its synonym and antonym systems, the stylistic functions of majaz (figurative expression) within the discipline of balagha (rhetoric), and the linguocultural connections between Arabic and Uzbek. The study argues that Arabic constitutes a unique global linguistic phenomenon whose features are best understood through a combination of structural- linguistic and culturological analytical approaches. 341 www.mijournals.com E-ISSN 3069-8375 The Journal of Interdisciplinary Human Studies and prosodic quality (Qodirov et al., 2018:12). These phonological features distinguish Arabic sharply from Indo-European languages and have important implications for the analysis of the phonological borrowings that entered Uzbek as Arabisms. For example, the second stem (faʼʼala) typically conveys intensification or causation, the third stem (faʼala) reciprocity, and the tenth stem (istafʼala) reflexiveness or desire. This systematic derivational architecture means that a competent reader can infer the approximate meaning of an unfamiliar derived verb from knowledge of the root alone (Yoyo, 2023:17). Lexical-semantic richness: synonymy and antonymy. Arabic constitutes a unique phenomenon among the world’s languages on account of its incomparable semantic richness and vast lexical resources. The language is particularly distinguished by the extraordinary profusion of its synonyms (al-mutaradifat) and antonyms (al-mutadaddat) (Yodgorova, 2025:48). Classical Arabic lexicography records, for instance, over two hundred words for lion, dozens for different states of the camel, and numerous terms for different qualities of rain – a lexical granularity that reflects centuries of oral culture in which precise observation of the natural world was recorded and transmitted in language. DISCUSSION The analyses presented above confirm that the linguistic uniqueness of Arabic is determined by several mutually reinforcing factors. First, the root-and-pattern morphology grants the language an extraordinarily productive word-formation capacity: from a single trilateral root it is possible to derive dozens, sometimes hundreds, of lexically related words (Academic Research, 2024:34; Zenodo, 2024:14). Second, the richness of the synonym system enriches the lexical resources of Arabic to a degree that is incomparable with most other languages; this granularity reflects a culture of precise linguistic observation accumulated over millennia of oral and written tradition (Yodgorova, 2025:48). Third, the phenomenon of diglossia requires maintaining the relationship between the two strata of the language – classical and colloquial – as complementarity rather than contradiction, a task that places distinctive demands on Arabic language education and policy (UzSWLU, 2024:47). For Uzbek, the significance of Arabic extends beyond the lexical layer. The science of balagha and the theory of majaz shaped the stylistic richness of the Uzbek literary language, and Islamic legal and theological terminology provided the conceptual framework for Uzbek juridical and religious thought across many centuries. These connections make the study of Arabic not merely a matter of foreign-language learning but a prerequisite for a full understanding of Uzbek literary, legal, and intellectual history. The evidence reviewed in this article therefore points to the need for an expanded and deepened scholarly collaboration between Uzbek and Arabic linguistics (Inlibrary.uz, 2023:118; Mirzoyeva, 2023:255). CONCLUSION In summary, Arabic occupies a unique position among the world’s languages on account of its structurally complex yet perfectly logical root-and-pattern morphology and its incomparable semantic richness. The morphologies of Semitic languages have most often been described as a system of roots and patterns suggesting a pluri-consonantal root. For example, the putative Arabic root √qbr has the derived forms qabara ‘he buried’, qubira ‘he was buried’, ʔaqburu ‘I bury’, qabr ‘grave’ (pl. qubūr), and maqbar ‘cemetery’ (pl. maqābir). Both traditional Semitist and generative morpheme- based research assume pluri-consonantal roots. However, there have been attempts to explain root-and-pattern morphology in terms of apophony instead. In these accounts, so-called Melodic Overwriting provides the morphophonological mechanism by which word-internal vowels are overwritten by vocalic affixes. The contrary approaches have been used to argue for different models of morphology (root-based vs. word-/stem-based), intermingling morphological theory with phonological representations. In this paper, a new theory of root-and-pattern morphology is proposed. It is shown that pluri-consonantal roots face several theoretical and empirical problems which are solved by assuming vocalised roots in a similar way to stem- and word-based approaches, but with the advantages of morpheme-based frameworks.
