While peer-reviewed literature discusses variables associated with hypnotic susceptibility, researchers note that mechanisms are not completely understood and direct evidence establishing the general alteration of human susceptibility remains limited.

This narrative review summarizes a representative collection of electrophysiological and imaging studies on the neural processes and brain sources underlying hypnotic trance and the effects of hypnotic suggestions on the processing of experimentally induced painful events. It complements several reviews on the effect of hypnosis on brain processes and structures of chronic pain processing. Based on a summary of previous findings on the neuronal processing of experimentally applied pain stimuli and their effects on neuronal brain structures in healthy subjects, three neurophysiological methods are then presented that examine which of these neuronal processes and structures get demonstrably altered by hypnosis and can thus be interpreted as neuronal signatures of the effect of analgesic suggestions: (A) On a more global neuronal level, these are electrical processes of the brain that can be recorded from the cranial surface of the brain with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG). (B) On a second level, so-called evoked (EPs) or event-related potentials (ERPs) are discussed, which represent a subset of the brain electrical parameters of the EEG. (C) Thirdly, imaging procedures are summarized that focus on brain structures involved in the processing of pain states and belong to the main imaging procedures of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI/fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). Finally, these different approaches are summarized in a discussion, and some research and methodological suggestions are made as to how this research could be improved in the future.

In contrast, attacking resident mice did not show any significant changes in either the hypnotic effect or regional brain concentration of PB. Because pretreatment with naloxone prior to daily agonistic confrontation antagonized the alteration in PB-induced hypnosis, it seems that endogenous opioid mechanisms may participate in this phenomenon. The present study indicates that susceptibility to a hypnotic drug can be altered by chronic social conflict experience. Published in Psychopharmacology (1989)

Researchers do not completely understand how hypnosis functions or what variables can predict an individual to have a high or low hypnotic susceptibility. Expectation is a variable that has been studied, but researchers disagree on the effect it has on hypnotic susceptibility. The purpose of this paper is to obtain a comprehensive understanding of how personal expectations affect hypnotic susceptibility. To this end, a critical literature review was conducted on studies dating from 1964 to 2017 examining the relationship between expectation and hypnotic susceptibility of college students. To be included in this review, all studies were required to measure both the participants' expectations of being hypnotized and their hypnotizability with a hypnotic susceptibility scale. An exhaustive search of the PsycINFO database identified 19 studies satisfying the listed and other requirements. Results indicated that expectancies of being hypnotized and hypnotic susceptibility have a very small correlation. Expectations assessed after the induction procedure tended to obtain higher correlations with hypnotic susceptibility than expectations assessed before the induction. Additionally, studies that assessed expectation by providing participants with a detailed written description of each suggestion tended to obtain higher correlations with hypnotic susceptibility than studies that did not give participants any information about the suggestions. When all is considered, expectation does not appear to be highly correlated with hypnotic susceptibility; however the modest correlation observed remains worthy of study as it is higher than other tested variables.

Dreaming and hypnotic susceptibility: a pilot study. Previous experimental work has indicated that certain stable personality characteristics are reliably associated with differential susceptibility to hypnosis. It is suggested that people who are more susceptible will be characterized by an awareness of dreaming more frequently, vividly and creatively. This study describes the construction of a Dream Questionnaire and the relations of the scores obtained on it to scores previously obtained on the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility. Sex differences were noted in response to the questionnaire. For women, a global score was derived from the questionnaire, and this was positively and significantly associated with hypnotic susceptibility. Men responded rather differently to the questionnaire and as hypnotic susceptibility scores were available for only a more limited number, further analysis was postponed until more data from men may become available. Some suggestions for research are discussed, and the relations between sleep research and hypnosis research are briefly considered. Published in Perceptual and motor skills (1985)

It has long been argued that hypnosis cannot promote behaviors that people will not otherwise engage in. Oxytocin can enhance trust in others, and may promote the extent to which a hypnotized person complies with the suggestion of a hypnotist. This double-blind placebo study administered oxytocin or placebo to high hypnotizable participants (N = 28), who were then administered hypnotic suggestions for socially unorthodox behaviors, including swearing during the experiment, singing out loud, and dancing in response to a posthypnotic cue. Participants who received oxytocin were significantly mor

There are competing theories explaining hypnosis and related phenomena. Altered state theories see hypnosis as an altered state of mind or trance, marked by a level of awareness different from the ordinary state of consciousness. In contrast, non-state theories see hypnosis as, variously, a type of placebo effect, a redefinition of an interaction with a therapist or a form of imaginative role enactment. During hypnosis, a person is said to have heightened focus and concentration and an increased response to suggestions. Hypnosis usually begins with a hypnotic induction involving a series of preliminary instructions and suggestions. The use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes is referred to as "hypnotherapy", while its use as a form of entertainment for an audience is known as "stage hypnosis", a form of mentalism. The use of hypnosis as a form of therapy to retrieve and integrate early trauma is controversial within the scientific mainstream. Research indicates that hypnotising an individual may aid the formation of false memories. Medical hypnosis is often considered pseudoscience or quackery. g Carleton University Responsiveness to Suggestion Scale 24 and Waterloo-Stanford Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form C 25 in two phases, reported weak correlations between openness to experience and hypnotic suggestibility. By contrast, Green, 26 using the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R), HGSHSA, and the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSSC), 27 obtained significant zero-order correlations in extraversion and agreeableness scores but failed to detect any association with openness to experience. Malinoski and Lynn 28 also failed to do so with similar methods. The inconformity of previous studies on the relationships between personality traits and hypnotic susceptibility might be due to insufficient numbers of participants, or that their participants were not highly hypnotizable. Indeed, healthy people displaying high suggestibility are grouped into a dissocial subtype with deficits in executive functioning and a predisposition to psychopathology and a subtype with superior imaginary and no observable deficits in functioning. 29 Furthermore, we believe that the unclear relationship between hypnosis and personality might be resulted from using different instruments to measure the hypnotic susceptibility and personality traits, or from not administering the hypnotic measures in participants with high or low hypnotic susceptibility extremes. These earlier inconsistent results prompted us to further explore the detailed personality traits in high and low hypnotizable people. Thus, this study was designed to explore the relationships between personality traits and hypnotic susceptibility in participants with either high hypnotizability or low hypnotizability. We used the NEO-PI-R because it is an extensively used measure for normal personality traits and correlates with personality disorder functioning styles, 30 – 32 and we used SHSSC because it is one of the widely used measures of the hypnotic susceptibility. 33 Participants and m
